Townsend Tips Wharton for Chelsea Move Under Alonso – 'Time to Leave Palace'

Xabi Alonso's Chelsea rebuild could begin with a raid on Crystal Palace for Adam Wharton, according to punditry suggesting the newly-appointed Blues boss should prioritise the £80m-valued midfielder.

The Liverpool legend has taken the Stamford Bridge hotseat ahead of next season with a considerable task awaiting him. Having missed European qualification, Chelsea face a summer of necessary player sales alongside their inevitable transfer market activity – all while trying to strengthen goalkeeping and defensive options.

Yet Andy Townsend, the ex-Chelsea midfielder, reckons Wharton should be a priority acquisition. The England international has caught attention from Manchester United as well, but Townsend sees him as the ideal partner for Moisés Caicedo in midfield.

"I could see a Moises Caicedo and Adam Wharton axis as the future of Chelsea," Townsend told OLBG. "If that's the way that Xabi Alonso wants to do it, whether it's a 4-2-3-1 or 3-4-3, then I could absolutely see that working."

Wharton's technical qualities have drawn particular praise. Townsend highlighted his composure and intelligence – traits reminiscent of Michael Carrick's playing style at Manchester United. "He always seemingly has his next pass ready, as soon as the ball comes to him, he knows what he's doing," Townsend explained. "I think Adam Wharton is a very classy player. He reminds me of Michael Carrick, the way Carrick used to play at Manchester United, he always looked like he had a bit of time on the ball."

The absence from recent England selection could yet prove the catalyst for Wharton's departure from Selhurst Park. Palace's recent upturn in fortunes provides an obvious springboard for a player of his calibre to pursue a bigger stage. "Missing out on the England squad may act as a little bit of an incentive to feel that it's time to move on," Townsend suggested. "Palace have just enjoyed some success and on the back of that, it would make perfect sense for him to move."

Townsend further emphasised Wharton's elegance alongside his physical capabilities – a rare blend in modern football. "In this era of players who are physical specimens, it's nice to see someone who can do a bit of that but also has an elegance about his game. Adam Wharton has that," he added. "I think he'd suit Chelsea."
