Wright Backs Arsenal to Edge City in Title Sprint After Narrow Defeat

Ian Wright has thrown his weight behind Arsenal to pip Manchester City to the Premier League crown, despite watching his side fall to a narrow defeat at the Etihad on Sunday.

Erling Haaland's decisive strike settled a tight encounter, with the Norwegian striker subsequently finding the net again in City's midweek 1-0 victory over Burnley to move Pep Guardiola's outfit top on goal difference.

Yet Wright emerged from the City loss in markedly better spirits than he had been following Arsenal's earlier stumbles against Bournemouth and Southampton. The pundit was adamant that the Gunners had done enough to at least salvage a draw, if not claim all three points.

"We played well enough to win the game," Wright declared on The Overlap. "We should have at least got the draw out of that game."

The crux of Wright's frustration centres on Arsenal's failure to convert their opportunities. He pointed to chances squandered by Eze, Martin Odegaard and Havertz—openings that should have been dispatched with greater clinical precision.

"When you watch City, they do give chances up and if you're going to be ruthless, you take them," he explained. "Haaland had one chance, bam, took it. Arsenal could have won that game."

This clinical edge, Wright maintains, is the missing ingredient as Arsenal bid to recover from what he describes as a period of faltering form. The Gunners began the campaign looking imperious, but recent results have allowed City back into the equation.

"We started the season with ruthlessness, everybody was saying 'it's Arsenal's to lose', because we looked absolutely faultless," Wright reflected. "Now, everybody's faltering and in this City game I thought we did enough."

His prediction? Arsenal will ultimately "creep over the line" and claim the title, provided they marry their creative output with greater finishing efficiency and restore the defensive solidity that characterised their opening months.

Wright has identified three Arsenal players with championship pedigree who must now galvanise the squad. Piero Hincapié (Bundesliga winner), Gabriel Jesus and Jurrien Timber (both winners in their respective leagues) must step forward and impart the winning mentality required to navigate the run-in.

"They need to step into that team and try to make them understand what it's going to take to finish this off because everybody in there will be having doubts," Wright said.

Looking ahead to Saturday's clash with Newcastle, Wright issued a bullish prediction: Arsenal will triumph by either 2-0 or 3-0, with the latter scoreline his favoured outcome. "We need that kind of result," he concluded.
