Van Dijk Urges Konate to Snub Madrid and Commit to Liverpool Future

Virgil van Dijk has publicly appealed to his Liverpool centre-back partner Ibrahima Konate to turn down Real Madrid and commit his future to Anfield, amid mounting speculation surrounding the Frenchman's next move.

Konate appeared destined for the Bernabéu last summer following the arrivals of Kylian Mbappe and Trent Alexander-Arnold, though a dip in form this season has cast doubt over that prospect. With his current deal expiring in the coming months, the 25-year-old faces a crucial decision about where his career heads next.

Speaking after Liverpool's 1-0 victory at Sunderland, Van Dijk emphasised the strength of their relationship whilst acknowledging the delicate nature of such negotiations. "We are friends, we speak about everything," the Dutchman explained. "It's a process and let's see what comes out of it. It's never that easy. We saw with my own situation last year so it's never that easy that we can just say 'let's get it done'."

Van Dijk, who himself narrowly avoided departing as a free agent before recently extending his own terms, made his position crystal clear. "Obviously I want him to stay. He's an important figure on the pitch. That's what everyone sees but off the pitch as well, he's one of the leaders. He's outstanding and in my eyes, a world-class centre back."

The Liverpool skipper recognised the limits of his persuasive powers, placing responsibility squarely on the club, Konate's representatives, and the player himself to reach an agreement. "I can do only so much but it's in the club's hands, together with his agents and himself so let's see what comes out of it but I have no influence otherwise on that," he said.

Should Konate depart, Liverpool's defensive resources would become dangerously thin. With Van Dijk approaching his 35th birthday in July, the club would be left leaning heavily on Joe Gomez, Rhys Williams, and Giovanni Leoni—the latter sidelined until August through injury.

Manager Arne Slot was equally effusive about Konate's display against the Black Cats, describing himself as unsurprised by the calibre on show. "Impressed but not surprised," Slot remarked. "He's an example, almost of our season, he's been so unlucky. He's played games where he's been so good for 89 minutes and then one moment ruins our game, his game."

The boss acknowledged that Konate has occasionally borne the brunt of criticism following individual errors, though he stressed that mistakes are an inevitable part of professional football. "It's not always about him but a few times that has happened and then everyone is focused on his mistake. But footballers make mistakes and not always the ball goes in," Slot explained.

Slot highlighted the defensive solidity Liverpool demonstrated at Sunderland, particularly in the final stages of the match. "I was just asked about the last 10 minutes and I said the good thing was we didn't concede a chance. Against Manchester City we didn't concede a chance after the first minute until the 84th minute, then we let one in. So it was good to hardly concede a chance and Ibou was a big part of that, together with Virgil."

The Liverpool manager also singled out Konate's personal battle with Sunderland's Brian Brobbey as a standout feature of his performance. "But I liked the mentality of the whole team. I was pleased to see how we defended. Ibou played a great game against Brobbey, who is always difficult to play against," Slot concluded.
