Tudor's Spurs Gamble: Risky Appointment Raises Eyebrows as De Zerbi and Pochettino Eye Summer Move

Tottenham's appointment of Igor Tudor has left those who have worked with the Croatian coach scratching their heads, with insiders describing the move as a significant roll of the dice.

Spurs moved swiftly to replace Thomas Frank on Friday after parting ways with their former manager following Wednesday's humbling 2-1 home defeat to Newcastle United—a result that left the north London outfit just five points above the drop zone. The club's alarming slide into a relegation scrap forced decisive action, and Tudor emerged as their chosen interim solution through the end of the campaign.

Matteo Moretto first broke news of an agreement, subsequently confirmed by Fabrizio Romano, who announced that Tudor would take the reins until June 2026. Romano also revealed the two names firmly in the frame for the permanent vacancy: Roberto De Zerbi and Mauricio Pochettino.

The 47-year-old arrives at White Hart Lane as interim fix-it man, though his track record raises some eyebrows. This represents his 12th managerial appointment since beginning his career at Hajduk Split back in 2013. Most recently, he replaced Thiago Motta at Juventus in March 2025, steering them to fourth place in Serie A before being shown the door in November following an eight-game stretch without victory.

According to The Telegraph's Matt Law, observers who know Tudor's methods have expressed surprise at Spurs' decision, viewing it as a calculated gamble. Their concerns centre on three key points: his tendency to depart clubs quickly, his complete absence of Premier League experience, and his reputation for being too volatile and emotionally expressive on the touchline.

Yet Sky Sports' Michael Bridge offers a counterpoint, suggesting Tudor ticks the boxes Spurs actually need right now. "They wanted someone battle-hardened with a proven ability to parachute into struggling outfits and deliver immediate results," Bridge explained. "Tudor fits that mould perfectly. He's been brought in precisely for these crucial months ahead, having previously stabilised situations at Juventus and Lazio in short bursts."

Bridge added that Pochettino—who remains beloved by the fanbase—retains admirers within the boardroom, though whether a summer reunion materialises remains uncertain.
