Tuchel Turns Up Heat on Palmer Ahead of England's Summer Squad Selection

Thomas Tuchel has made clear that Cole Palmer faces a fight to secure his spot in England's World Cup squad, though the national team boss has detected some positive indicators that the Chelsea star may finally be shaking off his persistent hamstring troubles.
Palmer's season at Stamford Bridge has been frustratingly interrupted by injury management under successive managers Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior. The 23-year-old hasn't featured for England since June, when he earned his sole cap under Tuchel, and must impress during forthcoming friendlies against Uruguay and Japan to stake a claim for the summer tournament.
With Palmer rarely hitting top form when available this term, Tuchel has nonetheless spotted something encouraging: the return of what he describes as the attacker's characteristic "stride" – a physical indicator that the worst of his injury struggles may be behind him.
"He has to show because we have more evidence without him than with him so the pressure is on him," Tuchel explained. "He had a difficult season but he has also had a difficult spell with the national team. He was only once available for us and when he was available, we decided to stick with the same squad so there is big competition for his best position, number 10."
The England manager stressed that Palmer remains engaged with the squad and continues to demonstrate quality in training, with his demeanour reflecting someone keen to fight for his future. Tuchel recalled observing Palmer's display against Arsenal as a turning point.
"For the first time in a long time, I had the feeling his stride was back to the original lengths," Tuchel said. "Before I felt he was not free and the stride was not long enough, the acceleration was not there and the movement was not free."
Feedback from both Palmer himself and Chelsea's coaching staff suggested the Arsenal performance marked a significant step forward. A subsequent outing against Aston Villa reinforced those impressions, with the Chelsea man producing a display characterised by considerable physical output.
"He is back to full confidence and we see it in training," Tuchel continued. "He is not pulling out or holding back. He needs to understand he fights for his place and we will not hand anything to anyone on a silver platter and he did this in a very nice way in exactly the right way."
With four training sessions already completed, Tuchel's message is unambiguous: Palmer must seize the opportunity before him, with no guarantees forthcoming to anyone regardless of reputation.
