Tuchel Demands 'Intensity' as Alexander-Arnold Left Out of England Squad

Thomas Tuchel has given his reasoning for omitting Trent Alexander-Arnold from the England squad, describing the call as "a difficult choice and maybe a hard choice – and maybe to a certain degree unfair" while insisting it remains the right football decision.

The Three Lions manager named a 35-player squad for Friday's friendly against Uruguay at Wembley and Tuesday's clash with Japan, with both matches serving as final auditions before the World Cup this summer. Alexander-Arnold, who has earned just a single cap under Tuchel's watch, found himself excluded despite recovering from injury and regaining form at Real Madrid recently.

Responding to the snub, the former Liverpool defender posted on Instagram: "Madrid. Y nada mas" – translated simply as "Madrid. And nothing else" – a pointed statement about his current focus.

When asked about the post ahead of the Uruguay fixture, Tuchel explained his tactical thinking behind the omission. The England boss has built his system around a specific profile of right-back, one demanding high energy and constant involvement in both attack and defence.

"We created a slightly different game model when he was not in camp in September, October, November," Tuchel said. "It was a game model that was built on intensity and positivity, built even on the profile of the right full back on overlaps, underlaps, very intense. It was a slightly different profile of players in camp who performed so well. We just stick to these guys."

Tino Livramento and Djed Spence are currently preferred at right-back, while Ben White has replaced Jarell Quansah in the squad. Reece James remains sidelined through injury.

Tuchel acknowledged the weight of the decision, revealing he had spoken directly with Alexander-Arnold to explain the situation. Yet he stopped short of closing the door permanently on the 26-year-old's World Cup prospects.

"He was with us in June, he should have maybe deserved a second chance," Tuchel reflected. "I know it creates noise when you leave a player like Trent out. He just has to accept it. It's just a choice. A 'sportive' choice."

The England manager intends to monitor Alexander-Arnold's performances for Real Madrid during the remainder of the campaign, including Champions League fixtures, before finalising his World Cup selection. While the Liverpool academy graduate remains on the extended list of possibilities, others have moved ahead in the pecking order for now.

"I think I know what Trent can give us," Tuchel added. "He took it on his chin, he will keep on going. I will make sure I see some matches from Real Madrid and maybe a Champions League match live to get my last impressions. He is on a long list and everyone is still in the mix but at the moment some other guys are just ahead."
