Rooney's Verdict: Alexander-Arnold Must Tighten Up Defensively to Reach Elite Status

Wayne Rooney has pinpointed exactly what Trent Alexander-Arnold must address if he's to claim the crown as football's finest full-back. The Real Madrid defender boasts attacking credentials that rank among the elite, yet his defensive vulnerabilities remain a persistent concern—one that opposing sides continue to exploit ruthlessly.

During Real Madrid's Champions League encounter with Benfica at the Stadium da Luz, Alexander-Arnold managed a respectable defensive outing, though his natural habitat remained the attacking third. Rooney, providing commentary for Amazon Prime Video, was forthright in his assessment: the England international must substantially improve his defensive contribution to reach the summit.

"Teams will target down the sides in transition," Rooney explained. "He needs to be sharp at both ends. Going forward, he's genuinely world-class. But defensively, off the ball—that's where the improvement must come. That's where questions linger about Trent."

The former England skipper added: "Should he fix that, there's absolutely no question he'll become the best full-back on the planet."

Alexander-Arnold's display was overshadowed, however, by a serious incident involving his teammate Vinicius Junior. Benfica's Gianluca Prestianni allegedly directed a racist insult at the Brazilian winger—an allegation that cast a shadow over Madrid's victory.

Speaking to CBS afterwards, Alexander-Arnold addressed the matter head-on. Though he hadn't witnessed the incident directly, he was unequivocal in his condemnation. "What's been reported is utterly shameful for the sport," he said. "There's simply no room for it, and it's spoiled the evening for everyone."

The full-back praised Vinicius for his response, noting that reporting the matter to officials represented the correct course of action. "As a player, that's all you can do," Alexander-Arnold reflected. "Our squad, our club—we're completely behind him. We stood firm against a deeply disappointing reaction from those around us."

He highlighted that Vinicius has endured similar treatment previously and emphasized the collective responsibility to support him. "It's ruined what should've been a great night. It's a disgrace to football and to society. But the way we handled it together, the way we kept our composure and stayed united—I'm genuinely proud of how everyone responded."
