Vinicius Junior's brace and Federico Valverde's contribution (before his red card) proved decisive as Real stormed back from behind to claim victory in the derby.

Dani Carvajal's selection ahead of Alexander-Arnold raised questions, but the reasoning has now emerged. According to reports, the 27-year-old showed up late to one of the week's final training sessions, prompting Arbeloa to make what he characterised as a necessary call to uphold squad discipline and maintain dressing room standards.

Arbeloa defended his decision with measured words in his post-match comments, stopping short of explicitly confirming the disciplinary nature of the benching. "Every game I choose the best starting XI," he stated. "Dani Carvajal had great minutes and I'm very pleased with him. Trent had a great impact and I'm lucky to have many good options, and that everyone is contributing as they did today. I repeat once again, in every game I select the best possible line-up for the team."

Alexander-Arnold did make his mark from the bench, entering the fray in the 64th minute to replace Carvajal and setting up Vinicius for his second of the evening.

The incident arrives at an awkward moment for Alexander-Arnold's England prospects. He has already been overlooked for Thomas Tuchel's 35-man squad for forthcoming friendlies against Uruguay and Japan. When injury ruled out Jarell Quansah, Tuchel opted to dust off Ben White—the Arsenal defender who hasn't represented his country for four years following his departure from the 2022 World Cup camp in Qatar—rather than turn to Alexander-Arnold.

Tuchel has maintained that his omission represents a "sporting decision," albeit one that proved "tough" to make regarding the former Reds stalwart.
