De Zerbi's Rashford Gambit: Can Spurs Solve Twin Problems with Man United Star?

Tottenham's summer recruitment drive has taken an intriguing turn as manager Roberto De Zerbi eyes Manchester United's Marcus Rashford as a potential game-changer for the struggling north London side.
Fresh from scraping survival with a 1-0 victory over Everton on the final day, Spurs are determined to climb the table after back-to-back 17th-place finishes. The club has already moved swiftly in the market, securing Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi on free transfers from Liverpool and Bournemouth respectively, whilst splashing around £52m on Brighton's Jan Paul van Hecke. Newcastle's Sandro Tonali, West Ham's Mateus Fernandes, and Manchester City's Savinho have all featured in their sights.
Now Rashford appears to be next on De Zerbi's wish list, though the logistics present a considerable challenge. Manchester United and Rashford have agreed a £40m release clause, a fee Spurs are reluctant to match. The club is exploring alternative arrangements at a reduced cost, but the player's immediate preference lies elsewhere—Barcelona, Bayern Munich, or even a United stay all rank higher than a switch to another Premier League club.
However, United's eagerness to offload the winger and trim his substantial wage bill could yet force a reckoning. De Zerbi, understood to be genuinely enthusiastic about Rashford's potential, is championing the move to the Spurs hierarchy. The England international is reportedly open to accepting reduced wages for the right opportunity at a pivotal moment in his career.
The attraction is clear: Rashford's versatility. During his spell at Barcelona last season, he accumulated 14 goals and 14 assists across all competitions, operating from the left flank and occasionally through the middle. For Spurs, he represents a potential one-man solution to their attacking vulnerabilities—capable of providing genuine quality on the left wing whilst offering an alternative at centre-forward. That dual capability could prove invaluable as De Zerbi attempts to rebuild a side that desperately needs creative firepower.
