The Netherlands international arrived at Spurs for €60m from RB Leipzig during the off-season but has found the move disappointing, managing just four goals and five assists across all competitions. More pressingly for the player, his employers are now staring down the barrel of relegation.

Sunday's capitulation at home to Nottingham Forest—a chastening 3-0 reverse—leaves Tottenham precariously positioned. They sit two points clear of Vitor Pereira's Forest side in 16th, with West Ham lurking just one place below them in 18th. It's a far cry from the ambitions that accompanied Simons' arrival.

With potential demotion looming, a fire sale of Tottenham's assets appears inevitable come summer, and Simons' name is already circulating among Europe's elite. His childhood club Barcelona, where he spent nine formative years in their academy before his teenage move to Paris Saint-Germain, now represents an escape route.

According to reports emerging from Spain, the 22-year-old is receptive to the idea of returning to the Camp Nou. More significantly, negotiations could prove less prohibitive than one might expect. His representatives are positioning the deal at approximately €40m—a remarkable €20m reduction on what Tottenham forked out just months earlier.

"The operation wouldn't be easy, but it is feasible," the reports suggest. "The player's entourage places the asking price at around €40million, a significant but manageable sum if the Catalan club decides to pursue his return. Barça values his talent, his familiarity with the club, and his potential for growth, although the current financial situation requires careful consideration of every move."

The stumbling block isn't financial gymnastics but Barcelona's cautious approach. While they recognise Simons' quality and his existing connection to the institution, their precarious balance sheet means every outlay demands scrutiny.
