Tottenham have landed their prize catch in the transfer market, wrapping up Mateus Fernandes from West Ham in a record-breaking £85m deal that sees the midfielder head to North London for medical tests this week.

The move represents Spurs' most expensive acquisition in their history, and it came after a frantic battle with Manchester United—a contest the Red Devils ultimately lost on financial grounds. According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, the difference proved decisive: while United were prepared to reach £85m through a combination of fixed fees and add-ons, Tottenham arrived with a guaranteed £85m upfront, no strings attached.

That guarantee proved the clincher for West Ham, who had been fielding interest from multiple suitors. United remained in talks with the player's representatives right up until Tuesday morning, but the structure of Tottenham's offer—a fixed fee rather than a package peppered with performance-based bonuses—gave the Hammers the certainty they craved.

Roberto De Zerbi, Tottenham's manager, was instrumental in pushing the deal through, having made Fernandes a priority target. Convincing the player to join a club that scraped survival on the final day of last season, rather than one assured of Champions League football, required some persuasion, but De Zerbi's influence proved sufficient.

The signing marks the fourth major addition to Tottenham's ranks this summer. The club have already secured Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, and Martin Dubravka on free transfers from Liverpool, Bournemouth, and Burnley respectively, while Jan Paul van Hecke arrived from Brighton for £52m.

Yet Spurs are not finished. Negotiations with Newcastle United over Sandro Tonali are progressing, with Italian sources suggesting a fresh bid exceeding €100m (approximately £86m) is on the table. Should that move materialise, it would topple the Fernandes deal as Tottenham's priciest outlay within days—a remarkable show of ambition from a club desperate to avoid another nail-biting finale like the one they endured last season.
