De Zerbi Commits to Tottenham Project—Even if Spurs Drop Down

Roberto De Zerbi's appointment as Tottenham manager is now official, bringing an end to the club's turbulent managerial merry-go-round. The former Brighton and Marseille boss has put pen to paper on a contract running through June 2031, signalling serious intent from the White Hart Lane hierarchy.

The Italian's arrival comes after Thomas Frank's earlier dismissal and Igor Tudor's brief, disastrous spell in interim charge. Tudor managed just seven matches before departing by mutual consent on Sunday, leaving Spurs in increasingly dire straits. With just seven league matches remaining, Tottenham sit a single point above the drop zone—a genuinely precarious position for a club of their stature.

Yet De Zerbi appears undaunted by the challenge. Speaking on Tuesday, the new boss declared himself "delighted" to take the reins at what he described as one of world football's biggest institutions. His stated mission is crystal clear: haul Spurs up the table and secure Premier League survival before plotting a fresh project for next season.

"Our short-term priority is to climb the Premier League table, which will be the complete focus until the final whistle of the last game of the season," De Zerbi said. He also emphasised his commitment to building a team capable of achieving great things whilst playing attractive, supporter-pleasing football—precisely the philosophy that earned him admirers during his time on the south coast.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has provided the most telling detail of De Zerbi's appointment: there is no relegation escape clause in his contract. According to Romano, De Zerbi made his position abundantly clear to the Tottenham board and playing squad—he is in this for the long haul, regardless of outcome. Should the unthinkable happen and Spurs drop into the Championship, De Zerbi is prepared to stay put, fight the good fight, and oversee a rebuild.

Romano confirmed De Zerbi will rank among the Premier League's top three highest-paid managers, underlining both his calibre and Tottenham's determination to get this right. The appointment represents a genuine reset, with De Zerbi committing fully to what lies ahead.

Paul Barber, De Zerbi's former boss at Brighton, offered warm words about the Italian's abilities. The Seagulls chief executive told talkSPORT that De Zerbi is "a fabulous football coach" who will "do very well" wherever his career takes him. Barber highlighted De Zerbi's two years at Brighton, during which the club reached European football for the first time in their history whilst maintaining an entertaining brand of football. Though their working relationship ultimately ended, Barber spoke of a "fantastic character" to work alongside.
