Tottenham's Deadline Day Hopes Dampened as European Clubs Hold Firm

Spurs' hopes of engineering a last-gasp swoop in the transfer market have taken a significant hit, according to reporting from a reliable source tracking the north London club's business.

After investing around £48m to land both Conor Gallagher and Souza on permanent transfers, Tottenham had continued casting their net for attacking reinforcements. The club's toothless form in the final third this season has made recruitment in that area a priority.

Yet the prospects of dramatic late additions now appear slim. Matt Law has ruled out moves for both Jhon Duran and Moussa Diaby, with Spurs having already dismissed any suggestions of pursuing either player on deadline day. The likelihood of Tottenham conjuring up a last-minute breakthrough is currently rated as remote.

This means that summer signings Randal Kolo Muani and Mathys Tel—both of whom have underwhelmed—will remain at the club. Whilst both have attracted interest from European suitors, they look set to stay put through the remainder of the window.

That assessment is reinforced by reports that Spurs have already notified Juventus, Kolo Muani's parent club, that the French striker will remain in place until the summer window opens.

Another target has also fallen away. Maghnes Akliouche of AS Monaco had briefly offered hope to some supporters, particularly after Monaco's move for Simon Adringa. However, the Ligue 1 outfit has made clear that the two deals are entirely separate, and they do not anticipate parting with the winger today.

Manager Thomas Frank did offer one telling insight into the club's ambitions this week. He confirmed that Tottenham had attempted to secure Manchester City's Antoine Semenyo during this window, describing the failed bid as evidence of the Lewis family's commitment to strengthening the squad.

"It was clear there is no doubt that the club wanted to sign Semenyo," Frank explained. "They did everything, and I think that is a clear signal that the Lewis family is very committed. That's the quality of players we are looking for to improve the squad."

The message appears to be that whilst Spurs remain hungry for upgrades, the available options—and the willingness of rival clubs to do business—have left them short of their targets as the clock winds down.
