Tottenham Face Defensive Exodus as Relegation Looms

Tottenham are bracing themselves for a potential summer clearout of their defensive ranks as the nightmare scenario of relegation becomes increasingly plausible.

Igor Tudor's struggling outfit are anchored to 16th place after 27 matches, just four points clear of the drop zone. Sunday's 4-1 home demolition at the hands of Premier League leaders Arsenal served as yet another grim reminder of where things stand, with Spurs now having lost at home in the league eight times already this campaign.

The arithmetic makes grim reading. West Ham's draw with Bournemouth on Saturday narrowed the gap further, while improving sides like Nottingham Forest and Leeds United are circling. It's a far cry from last season's 17th-place finish under Ange Postecoglou, when the relegated clubs were so comprehensively poor that the writing was on the wall by February.

With European football already a distant memory and survival the paramount concern, Tottenham's hierarchy is reportedly eyeing the summer transfer market with fresh urgency. Two names topping the exit list are centre-backs Romero and Van de Ven, both of whom have attracted serious interest from elite clubs across Europe.

Van de Ven has caught the attention of Liverpool and Real Madrid, while Atletico Madrid have been linked with Romero—a player who might just be the Colchoneros' ideal signing despite never having actually worn their shirt. Moving either would command substantial fees, yet the club is already preparing for their potential departures.

Bayern Munich's Kim Min-jae has emerged as a leading candidate to fill any defensive void. Transfer insider Pete O'Rourke suggested Spurs are actively scouting replacements, telling Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast: "Look, if Spurs are out of Europe and struggling, they're going to find themselves more susceptible to offers for their best players."

Rourke continued: "It's going to be an interesting summer for Tottenham. They'll be desperate to get out of this relegation dogfight and improve their squad to avoid a similar situation in the coming seasons. If both of those players were to leave, obviously they will need to bring in replacements. I think they've been looking at some centre-backs who might be available. Kim, I think, has got all the attributes to be a success in the Premier League. It's a tough deal to do, and there are a number of clubs who will be looking at Kim's situation at Bayern, especially if he decides he wants to move on."

On paper, Spurs possess a squad that should have no business anywhere near the relegation mire. Yet it's also a collection that appears neither sufficiently cohesive nor inspired enough to mount a genuine title challenge. What matters now is whether they can excavate themselves from their current predicament before summer arrives.
