Spurs Chase Senesi as Summer Overhaul Looms; Romero, Van de Ven Exits Loom if Worst Happens

Tottenham's summer recruitment plans are taking shape, with fresh reports confirming the north London outfit have emerged as the leading candidates to secure AFC Bournemouth's Marcos Senesi on a free transfer when the window opens.

The 28-year-old Argentine centre-back, who will become available without a fee in July, is the subject of advanced negotiations with Spurs, according to The Athletic's David Ornstein. Liverpool and Chelsea have also cast admiring glances towards the defender, but Tottenham currently hold pole position in the race for his signature.

"Tottenham Hotspur are in advanced talks to sign Bournemouth defender Marcos Senesi this summer, subject to maintaining their Premier League status," Ornstein revealed. "The north London club are currently the leading contender to sign the 28-year-old centre-back — who will become a free agent in July — although no deal has been finalised and the Argentine's situation remains open with ongoing interest from other clubs."

Senesi would represent Spurs' second summer signing, following hot on the heels of news that Liverpool's Andy Robertson will join the club on a free transfer.

The Bournemouth man has been among the Premier League's most reliable defensive performers this season, making him an attractive prospect for several of the division's bigger hitters. However, any recruitment strategy remains contingent on Tottenham's ability to preserve their top-flight status.

Roberto De Zerbi's side currently occupy a relegation spot with six matches remaining to play, having failed to register a Premier League victory throughout 2026. Their perilous position has not deterred the club from planning for the summer, though the calculus changes dramatically depending on their final-day fate.

Should the unthinkable occur and Spurs slip through the trap door, wholesale changes would follow. Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Xavi Simons are all expected to depart if relegation becomes reality, with their stock unlikely to survive a season outside the top flight.

The club's midfield contingent, however, remains sacrosanct. James Maddison, Conor Gallagher and Archie Gray are viewed as untouchable assets, central to Tottenham's future regardless of which division they find themselves competing in come August.
