Bergvall Courted by Chelsea and Villa; Tottenham Braced for Summer Tug-of-War

Tottenham have fended off winter approaches for Lucas Bergvall from two rival Premier League outfits, with David Ornstein revealing that Chelsea and Aston Villa both came knocking on the door in January.

The Spurs hierarchy made their stance abundantly clear when both sides made formal enquiries about the Sweden international's availability. Direct contact was established, but Tottenham swiftly communicated that the 20-year-old was not for sale at any price this window, and the matter went no further.

Ornstein's reporting suggests the Lilywhites could be in for a proper scrap come the summer window, however, with the young midfielder facing an uncertain future regarding his place in the pecking order. Under previous boss Ange Postecoglou, Bergvall had been a standout performer, but his fortunes shifted following Thomas Frank's appointment—before the manager was sacked on Wednesday.

Villa's enquiry came hot on the heels of Tottenham pinching Conor Gallagher from under their noses, whilst Chelsea's interest emerged as they were simultaneously weighing up a move for Douglas Luiz, who ultimately ended up at Villa Park.

The 20-year-old was instrumental in Tottenham's Europa League triumph last season, a campaign that earned him considerable admiration. Pep Guardiola previously singled him out for special praise, describing the Swede as "unstoppable" and highlighting his physical prowess alongside the likes of Maddison, Spence, Pedro Porro, and Udogie as part of a formidable attacking unit.

Guardiola remarked: "The pace of this team? Pfft, it is difficult. Maybe Liverpool [are better], but Bergvall, every time he has the ball and run, unstoppable. Spence and Pedro Porro, Udogie, [Dejan] Kulusevski, Son [Heung-min], an incredible physical team with a clear idea to play. They play really good and they play without [Cristian] Romero and [Micky] Van de Ven, two of maybe the best central defenders in the league. The game, it was open second half because we didn't close the first."

The picture remains murkier still with incoming interim manager Igor Tudor set to take the reins until season's end. Whether the Croatian's arrival signals a change in Bergvall's role remains to be seen. Tudor reportedly secured the position based on his track record of swift impact interventions, having been appointed at both Juventus and Lazio in March over the past two seasons.

Sky Sports' Michael Bridge explained the logic: "Spurs have been looking for an experienced head coach with a track record of going into clubs and making an immediate impact, and they see Tudor as someone who perfectly fits that bill. He was appointed at Juventus and Lazio in March in the last two seasons. He stabilised results in the short term. He guided Juve to fourth in Serie A to achieve Champions League qualification that earned him a two-year contract, but he was sacked just four months later after results deteriorated. He's got this role based on what he's done on a short-term basis at Lazio and Juve, and I can't stress enough the importance of short term because it's a huge few months ahead for Tottenham."

With Mauricio Pochettino remaining an admirer of the club and the fans, speculation continues to swirl around a potential summer reunion, though nothing has been confirmed.
