Shearer Backs Spurs to Survive on Goal Difference as Relegation Drama Reaches Climax

The Premier League's relegation scrap heads towards a nerve-shredding conclusion this Sunday, with Tottenham's survival hopes hanging in the balance against West Ham's desperate bid to avoid the drop.

Spurs have endured a chaotic campaign, parting ways with two managers already, but Roberto De Zerbi has steadied the ship of late. Eight points from their last five matches have given the north Londoners genuine hope, and they sit just two points clear of West Ham, who currently occupy the final relegation spot.

The mathematics favour Tottenham. A draw against Everton would secure safety thanks to their significantly superior goal difference, meaning even a defeat needn't prove fatal if West Ham slip up elsewhere.

Alan Shearer, the Premier League's most decorated striker, has cast his eye over the endgame and believes Spurs will just about make it through. Speaking to The Metro, the legend predicted a draw at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, which would be enough to keep them up on goal difference.

Shearer acknowledged the suffocating pressure that will envelop Spurs on the day, suggesting Everton could exploit the tension, but ultimately backed the home side to hold firm. "The pressure that Spurs are going to be under, I do think that Everton will go and get something off Spurs. I'm going to go and say a draw, and I think Spurs will stay up on goal difference," he said.

West Ham's path to safety requires beating Leeds United at the London Stadium whilst hoping Everton deliver a favour in north London. Shearer reckons the Hammers will claim victory over Leeds but fears it won't be enough, having witnessed their defensive frailties first-hand at Newcastle the previous Sunday. "They came in with a new system, tried to play five at the back and changed after 25 minutes or so because they were 2-0 down. But they were really, really poor," he observed.

However, not everyone shares Shearer's optimism about Spurs' prospects. Danny Murphy, the former Tottenham and Liverpool midfielder, is gripped by foreboding. Speaking on talkSPORT, Murphy expressed concern that Spurs could be undone by their chronic inability to create and convert chances, warning that an early setback could trigger a collapse under the weight of expectation.

"I think it will be a tiny margin on the day, a lot will depend on Tottenham's start to the game, I think if they were to go a goal down, the nerves would kick in," Murphy said. "One of Tottenham's biggest problems is their creativity, chances, they can't score goals!"

Murphy predicted West Ham would overcome Leeds but harboured grave doubts about Spurs' survival prospects. "I want Tottenham to stay up but I've got a bad feeling they're going to go," he admitted.
