Tottenham Clear to Land Trafford as Manchester City Seal Goalkeeper Replacement

Spurs have removed a significant hurdle in their pursuit of Manchester City's James Trafford, with the Citizens now positioned to facilitate the goalkeeper's exit following their arrangement to re-sign Pierce Charles from Sheffield Wednesday.

Tottenham's summer business has already been nothing short of eye-catching. The north London outfit started by recruiting three seasoned performers in Martin Dubravka, Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi before splashing out a combined £237m on Jan Paul van Hecke (£52m), Mateus Fernandes (£85m) and Sandro Tonali (£100m).

Fresh recruitment continues to be on the agenda. Winger reinforcements remain a priority, with Liverpool's Cody Gakpo and Manchester City's Savinho both linked with moves to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Yet Spurs' ambitions don't stop there, with the 23-year-old Trafford very much on their radar.

Trafford finds himself in an awkward position at the Etihad. The England international was originally groomed as Ederson's long-term successor, only for City to spring a surprise by acquiring Gianluigi Donnarumma last summer. That move effectively consigned Trafford to the bench, and the club appears willing to let him depart rather than keep him sidelined.

Should Trafford complete his switch to Tottenham, he would assume the number one role, displacing current custodian Antonin Kinsky, who would return to Serie A.

The pathway for Trafford's exit has now materialised thanks to City's incoming goalkeeper. Both Fabrizio Romano and Ben Jacobs have confirmed that Enzo Maresca's Manchester City side are bringing Pierce Charles back to the club. The 20-year-old academy product departed for Sheffield Wednesday in 2021 and is now set for a homecoming.

Romano confirmed the arrangement on social media, stating the deal with Sheffield Wednesday is in place with formalities being finalised, though City will make a subsequent decision on whether Charles remains or heads out on loan. Jacobs corroborated this reporting, indicating Charles would likely be loaned out initially.

The Charles arrangement effectively gives Trafford the green light to leave, even if the young goalkeeper is loaned rather than retained. Should Charles depart on loan, City would venture into the market for a more experienced backup option—a model they previously employed with Stefan Ortega. Yann Sommer, the 37-year-old who recently departed Inter Milan as a free agent, has caught the attention of both City and Maresca.

Alternatively, City could opt to keep Charles at the club as Donnarumma's understudy from the outset.

What remains certain is that Trafford now has the opportunity to move on from Manchester City, and Tottenham are waiting in the wings with genuine intent. City will be seeking a fee no lower than the £31m they paid to bring Trafford back to the club last summer.
