Tottenham in talks over Real Madrid's Rudiger as Van de Ven exit looms

Tottenham are weighing up a swoop for Antonio Rudiger to plug the defensive gap that would be left behind if Micky van de Ven completes his anticipated move to Real Madrid.

The Dutchman's transfer to the Bernabéu has been gathering pace, with Los Blancos expected to stump up at least £70million for the 24-year-old centre-back. Given that departure looks increasingly probable, Spurs face the prospect of needing a marquee defensive recruit of their own.

Enter Rudiger. The German stalwart, now 32, finds himself in the final six months of his Real Madrid contract and represents a tempting prospect for several suitors. Tottenham have opened discussions over a potential deal, though they're not alone in their interest—West Ham and Crystal Palace are also circling, all three clubs actively pursuing negotiations.

A return to English football holds obvious appeal for Rudiger, a two-time Champions League winner whose availability on a free transfer next summer makes the arithmetic particularly attractive. Chelsea, his former club, are notably absent from the race at present, despite the obvious narrative appeal of a homecoming.

Van de Ven arrived at Spurs from Wolfsburg in 2023 for roughly £35million and showed considerable promise initially, racking up 27 Premier League appearances in his debut campaign. Last season's Europa League triumph saw him contribute eight appearances and produce a vital goal-line clearance in the final victory over Manchester United. However, injuries have restricted his impact this term, limiting him to just 13 league outings.

The prospect of losing Van de Ven would represent another headache for a club in freefall. Tottenham sit 16th in the table, just five points clear of the relegation zone, having managed only two league wins from their last 17 outings. That catastrophic run forced the departure of Thomas Frank, with interim boss Igor Tudor now tasked with salvaging the season and keeping the north London outfit in the top flight while maintaining their Champions League challenge.

Rudiger wouldn't be a like-for-like replacement in terms of age, but his experience and pedigree would offer immediate credibility to a defensive unit crying out for stability.
