Tonali Brushes Off Transfer Chatter with Double Against Villa, Embraces Howe to Silence Speculation

Sandro Tonali served notice that the chatter surrounding his Newcastle future and his relationship with Eddie Howe can take a back seat to what matters on the pitch. The Italian midfielder bagged a brace in the Magpies' chaotic FA Cup progression past Aston Villa, a display that came complete with a pointed gesture toward his boss.

After his second goal, Tonali sprinted straight to Howe for an embrace—a moment that felt less spontaneous celebration and more deliberate statement. In the aftermath, the midfielder was keen to address the speculation that had swirled around St James' Park in recent weeks.

"The first one, this celebration was, I think, seven months without scoring; if you don't score for seven months, after the first goal, you celebrate for ten or 11 goals – like Bruno (Guimarães)!" Tonali explained.

On that telling hug with his manager, he added: "But after the second goal, I came to Eddie (Howe) because in the past few weeks, people spoke about our relationship, but I work every day with the gaffer, the gaffer works every day with me, and our relationship is perfect. It's not broken and I think this is perfect for the team."

The midfielder's form had dipped noticeably in recent months, which inevitably led to the usual transfer mill grinding into action. Arsenal were reported to have been offered his services on deadline day, with intermediaries supposedly exploring the possibility of a move to the Emirates. Both clubs downplayed the links, though Tonali's representation later suggested discussions over his future would happen once the season concluded.

Newcastle, meanwhile, have been keeping tabs on midfield targets for the summer window—Roma's Lorenzo Pellegrini among the names mentioned—lending weight to the theory that the club might be contemplating a future without their Italian star.

Against Villa, however, Tonali reminded everyone why he remains central to Newcastle's ambitions. He was instrumental in orchestrating the comeback, driving forward with purpose as the afternoon descended into refereeing chaos. Alan Shearer and Wayne Rooney both took aim at the official's performance, with former PGMOL chief Keith Hackett backing their criticism.

"The challenge by Digne should have received a red card," Hackett said. "It was clear serious foul play." On another contentious moment, he added: "Oh dear. Referee Chris Kavanagh really should have received appropriate intervention by the assistant to advise that it was in the penalty area."
