Tuchel's England Squad Gutted as Arsenal Trio Exit Camp Before Japan Friendly

Thomas Tuchel's grand 35-man England experiment has taken a battering, with eight players heading for the exit ahead of Tuesday's friendly against Japan. The Gunners have borne the brunt of the departures, losing Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, and Noni Madueke—all released for "medical assessment" following the 1-1 stalemate with Uruguay.

The timing raises eyebrows, particularly given that Rice and Saka only pitched up on Friday after being afforded extra recovery time, yet neither kicked a ball in anger during this international window. Madueke's exit is especially troubling for Arsenal supporters, the winger spotted departing the camp in a protective boot after a heavy training-ground collision.

John Stones, Adam Wharton, Aaron Ramsdale, Fikayo Tomori, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin have also been released, leaving Tuchel considerably short-handed. The net result? A squad whittled down from 35 to 27 ahead of the Japan encounter.

Tuchel sought to frame the cull as pragmatism rather than panic. "We have to be realistic about what we can demand from the players at this stage of the season," he told reporters. "If a player is not at 100 per cent, there is no point in them being here for a friendly. It allows us to look at others who are fighting for a place in the final World Cup squad."

His stated intention with the split-squad approach was to manage player workloads. Whether that's how it's landed in the eyes of Premier League title-chasing clubs is another matter entirely. The optics of three Arsenal stars departing have certainly fuelled speculation about the tug-of-war between club and country.

With Mikel Arteta's side in the thick of things domestically, the convenience of medical assessments for Rice and Saka hasn't gone unnoticed. Tuchel, though, insists the England medical team made the calls.

Perhaps the strangest subplot is Ben White. The defender remains in camp as Arsenal's sole representative, a peculiar position given his teammates have all departed. His recall was trumpeted as significant business by Tuchel, yet he now finds himself something of a lone figure.

On the subject of defensive upheaval, Tuchel has been characteristically blunt with Harry Maguire. The Manchester United veteran was informed he sits fifth in the centre-back pecking order, leaving his World Cup prospects hanging by a thread. "Harry is a professional, but I have to be honest with him," Tuchel said. "We have younger players who are playing at a very high level every week. The door is never closed, but the competition is very high."

With the squad trimmed and refocused, Tuchel will use the Japan fixture to run the rule over fringe players, including Kobbie Mainoo and White, as he plots his summer strategy.
