Real Madrid Lurking as Liverpool Grapple with Szoboszlai Contract Standoff

Liverpool face a potential summer headache as Real Madrid circle Dominik Szoboszlai, the Hungarian midfielder who has emerged as the Reds' standout performer throughout a forgettable 2025/26 campaign.

Szoboszlai has been nothing short of exceptional when called upon, racking up 10 goals and seven assists across 36 appearances in all competitions. Deployed across multiple positions—attacking midfield, right-back, right wing, and defensive midfield—the 25-year-old has demonstrated the kind of versatility and commitment that's rare at elite level, essentially carrying his side through a disappointing title defence.

The problem for Liverpool is straightforward: Real Madrid have a track record of prising talented players away from the Premier League, and Szoboszlai's dream, according to Hungary manager Marco Rossi, is precisely that—to wear the white shirt at the Bernabéu.

Liverpool are keen to tie their talismanic midfielder down to fresh terms, with his current contract running through 2028. The Reds are reportedly confident a new deal will be sealed before next season, with negotiations having already progressed positively. However, Szoboszlai currently pockets around £120,000 per week, and any extension would almost certainly demand a substantial wage increase reflecting his elevated status.

That's where things get tricky. Former Premier League chief executive Keith Wyness has warned that the Spanish giants represent a genuine threat. "He's the best player in the squad, first name on the team sheet," Wyness told Football Insider's Inside Track podcast. "It's something Liverpool will have to watch closely at the end of the season. There's form for Real Madrid taking Liverpool players, as we know."

Wyness reckons Szoboszlai has demonstrated enough quality to catch Madrid's eye, and given his own stated ambitions, rejecting Los Blancos could prove difficult for the midfielder.

The financial side adds another layer of complexity. Correspondent Stefan Borson believes Szoboszlai now occupies the £100m bracket in terms of valuation, though he's sceptical Madrid would actually spend at that level this summer. Liverpool, meanwhile, would likely hesitate before accepting such an offer anyway—replacing a player of Szoboszlai's calibre presents its own headaches.

Borson noted that Real Madrid's financial position remains exceptionally strong following their successful stadium redevelopment, which has generated substantial revenues. Yet whether that translates into a nine-figure summer outlay for Liverpool's talisman remains to be seen.

For now, the Reds will be hoping their contract talks bear fruit before the window opens.
