Slot Delivers Grim Endo Verdict as Liverpool Navigate Defensive Crisis

Wataru Endo's injury woes are every bit as serious as feared. Arne Slot has confirmed the Japanese midfielder will be sidelined for "quite a long time" after suffering a nasty knee injury during Wednesday's Premier League victory over Sunderland, when he was pressed into service at right-back to cover for the absent Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong.

That defeat of Sunderland—which saw Liverpool topple the Black Cats' unbeaten home record—has left the Reds just two points adrift of Chelsea in fifth, with Champions League qualification firmly within reach. Yet the silver lining has been quickly tarnished by Endo's setback.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday's FA Cup clash with Brighton, Slot acknowledged the mounting injury crisis. "We still need to assess but it's clear and obvious he's out for quite a long time," the Liverpool boss explained. "Don't forget he is a good centre-back and midfielder too and it is not as though positions…we're quite vulnerable there as well."

The loss of Endo compounds an already stretched situation at the back, with Bradley and Frimpong already ruled out. Brighton, managed by Fabian Hurzeler, provide the next test at Anfield—a fixture Slot views with considerable respect.

"Not the first time we've had three games in seven days, it is part of being a top club," Slot remarked on the fixture congestion. "We play a strong Brighton side, they don't deserve the position they are in, they play so much better than the table shows, they deserve more than they get so it is another challenge."

The manager admitted team selection has been keeping him awake. "It took me a long time before I could fall asleep because I was constantly thinking of the same options. Which players, which other players, which positions, so I need another 24 hours."

Among the positives, Slot has been particularly impressed by two attacking talents. Milos Kerkez, the £40m summer arrival from Bournemouth, has developed into a genuine attacking threat down the left flank after a tentative introduction to Merseyside football. "The energy both bring is important, Milos has shown this season that defensively he is very solid and able to defend 1v1 against the best wingers in the world and more and more we saw what he did at Bournemouth, an offensive threat, the power to go up and down," Slot said.

But it is Dominik Szoboszlai who has truly captured the manager's admiration. "Szoboszlai, I cannot stop talking about his qualities, close to ridiculous, on and off the ball, work rate another level, the intensity, he presses, unbelievable, technique, game insight, offensive midfielder, right-back, right-winger, all these qualities in these positions, he has been vital for us this and last season. He will continue to be that for us."
