Gerrard Slams Liverpool's "Unacceptable" Burnley Draw as Slot Braces for Incoming Storm

Steven Gerrard has laid into Liverpool's latest stalemate, insisting Arne Slot faces a "difficult week" after the Reds stumbled to a 1-1 draw against Burnley—a result that has heaped fresh scrutiny on the manager's future at Anfield.

The draw represents another frustrating evening at home, following earlier goalless stalemates against Sunderland and Leeds. More damning still: Liverpool have now failed to register a win against all three newly-promoted sides in a single season for the first time since the Premier League's inception. A 12-game unbeaten streak, it seems, carries precious little cause for celebration.

Florian Wirtz had put Liverpool ahead with a polished finish, only for Marcus Edwards to level matters in the second half. The scoreline was made all the more galling by Dominik Szoboszlai's squandered penalty in the opening 45 minutes, leaving Slot's men to settle for their fourth draw in succession across the league.

Gerrard pulled no punches in his assessment of the performance. "Even though they're on a better run in terms of unbeaten games, the draws to the likes of Leeds and Burnley at home—you know and I know that's not acceptable," he said.

"There will be a lot of criticism that comes the manager's way again."

Yet the Liverpool legend stopped short of abandoning faith entirely. He acknowledged that Slot deserves credit for steadying the ship after a difficult spell, hauling the team from mid-table obscurity back into Champions League contention. "I felt that this manager was capable of making things better," Gerrard reflected. "He has moved the team from the middle of the table back into Champions League positions, and I think that will be a priority for him and the team—minimum top four this season."

Still, Gerrard was adamant that such progress cannot excuse the current malaise. "That won't take anything away from the criticism that will come his way," he added.

The former Rangers boss also took issue with the conservative approach Slot has adopted to arrest the slump. With the squad possessing sufficient talent on paper, Gerrard questioned why Liverpool cannot find a way through well-drilled defences.

"The manager's openly said himself that they're struggling against teams that put a lot of men behind the ball," Gerrard noted. "Whatever you want to call it, a low block, the manager's said that they're struggling with the creativity. They've got some injuries in the forward positions, I'll give them that, but you can't use it as an excuse."

He continued: "The team that he's built and the team that he's inherited, there should be enough quality and enough talent to open these teams up and score. One-nil at home, you're always going to be at risk of conceding a sloppy goal and then it leads to two points dropped."

With the Champions League looming, Slot will be acutely aware that the scrutiny shows no signs of easing. "Arne will be in for a difficult week before the Champions League," Gerrard concluded.
