Slot Bristles at Defensive Tactics Question as Liverpool Prepare for Wolves Replay

Arne Slot found himself visibly irritated during his pre-match press conference when a journalist suggested Liverpool might benefit from a less defensive setup for Friday's FA Cup replay at Wolves.

"I'm almost annoyed if you say 'that approach' because the approach is no different," Slot said firmly. "The approach is we want to have the ball as much as possible and want to have it back as soon as possible."

He elaborated on Liverpool's established game plan: constant pressing, possession-based football, and attacking whenever the ball reaches their feet. What has been lacking, Slot acknowledged, is clinical finishing in crucial moments rather than any fundamental change in how his side approaches matches.

"We always press high and when we have the ball we try to attack," he continued. "We don't approach the game by saying in the first 70 minutes we don't want the ball and we don't want to attack. We do."

The Liverpool boss pointed to contextual factors that might explain the contrast between attacking threat in the opening exchanges and the second half. Opposition fitness levels, tactical adjustments made by the opposition when ahead, and Liverpool's own late urgency all play a role, he suggested.

"That there's a difference in the last 10 minutes in terms of chance creation compared to the first 80, that is clear," Slot said. "There's no difference in the approach. Attack as much as you can. That's what you see in the game."

He acknowledged that Liverpool's inability to convert their possession into significant scoring opportunities is an ongoing concern that has persisted throughout the campaign, but stressed this reflects execution rather than intent.

On the injury front, there was a glimmer of hope for Wednesday's visit to Molineux. Florian Wirtz, absent for the previous two fixtures, has progressed in his rehabilitation and could feature for a brief spell on Friday night if all goes to plan.

"He trained half-and-half yesterday with the team," Slot explained. "What I mean by that is he was a 'joker'. He made the next step in his rehab. Let's see where he is today and if he then could be available for a few, a few minutes tomorrow in the best-case scenario."
