Maguire Offered to Inter Milan Just Weeks After Signing New United Contract

In a curious turn of events, Harry Maguire finds himself at the centre of transfer speculation just weeks after putting pen to paper on a new Manchester United contract in April.

According to reports from Gazzetta dello Sport, the England defender has been offered to Inter Milan. Whether the approach originated from United themselves or Maguire's representatives remains unclear, though the latter scenario seems more plausible given the timing of his contract renewal.

Maguire's seven-year tenure at Old Trafford has been anything but straightforward. Arriving as football's priciest defender, he's cycled through periods as captain, found himself sidelined, and latterly re-established himself as a key player. Yet his recent form evidently failed to convince Thomas Tuchel, who omitted him from England's World Cup squad—a snub Maguire made his feelings known about publicly.

The prospect of an Inter switch may have been prompted by frustration over that international omission. If Maguire's representatives genuinely initiated contact with the Nerazzurri, they might harbour doubts about what United can still offer him, particularly after his exclusion from the national setup.

However, the likelihood of this move materialising appears slim. Inter have identified Udinese centre-back Oumar Solet as their primary defensive target, with defensive reshaping already underway at the San Siro.

Not everyone shares the view that Maguire deserves the cold shoulder. Sam Allardyce recently championed his cause, arguing that both Maguire and Luke Shaw warranted places in England's squad based on their recent performances and experience.

"Since returning to the United team, he's been instrumental in restoring defensive stability to the club," Allardyce stated. "That solidity has translated into more victories. Beyond the defensive side, he's genuinely among the country's finest ball-playing centre-halves."

Allardyce also suggested Maguire represented a stronger option than Dan Burn, citing his proven pedigree in the Three Lions setup.

Whether Maguire will engineer a summer departure or remain at United to fight for his place remains to be determined.
