Shearer Backs Arsenal to Shade United in Emirates Showdown

Sunday's Emirates encounter between Arsenal and Manchester United stands as the weekend's marquee Premier League fixture, carrying substantial weight in the title race and top-four battle alike.

The Gunners can strengthen their grip on the championship, while United arrive buoyed by an emphatic victory over Manchester City that has injected fresh momentum into their campaign. When these sides squared off at Old Trafford early in the season, Arsenal scraped a 1-0 win through uninspired play, with United earning plaudits for their attacking intent despite the defeat.

The pair have travelled divergent paths since that encounter, yet Michael Carrick's outfit will fancy their chances following last week's statement result against the defending champions.

Alan Shearer nonetheless views this as a genuine test for Mikel Arteta's men. The Newcastle legend acknowledges United's tactical blueprint—inviting pressure before exploiting space on the counter, much as they did through Mbeumo's goal against City—but he sees Arsenal emerging with a slender victory.

"I was in Milan on Tuesday watching Arsenal; Arteta made six or seven changes to the team that played Forest, and they were still very impressive," Shearer told The Metro. "They also don't have to worry about Europe next Wednesday because they are guaranteed first or second, so they can play their strongest team without distraction.

"Despite what we saw from Man United last week, I think Arsenal will edge it. It'll be a really tough game, likely decided by one goal."

Paul Scholes, meanwhile, reckons Arsenal could romp to the title "at a canter" this season, though he's identified a notable gap in their resume. Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate with Sky Bet, the former United midfielder highlighted their failure to topple Liverpool or Manchester City when it matters.

"One thing Arsenal haven't done is they haven't won a big game, beat a Liverpool or a Man City, they still haven't done it," Scholes said. "And I said earlier in the season that I can't see them winning the league unless they start beating those types of teams.

"But looking at how many points Liverpool and City are dropping, I don't think they are going to have to. I think it could be a canter for them. In other years gone by, City or Liverpool would be closer, and that's the time when you have to win those games."
