Shearer Questions Kerkez Selection After Robertson's Wolves Masterclass

Alan Shearer has cast doubt on whether Milos Kerkez has genuinely warranted his status as Liverpool's first-choice left-back, following a display from Andy Robertson that suggested the Scottish veteran remains the superior option.

Robertson's impact on Merseyside was impossible to ignore. The 30-year-old broke the deadlock in the second half with a well-struck effort from outside the area—his finish so clean you could barely hear it—before threading a pinpoint cross to Mohamed Salah just two minutes later. Curtis Jones wrapped up proceedings with a curled finish in the 74th minute, but Robertson's fingerprints were all over Liverpool's improved showing after the interval. Teenager Rio Ngumoha had offered the sole bright spark during a forgettable opening 45 minutes at Molineux.

Reflecting afterwards, Robertson remained characteristically measured about his predicament. "A bit more like it," he said. "We know we let ourselves down on Tuesday. Not the performance we expect from ourselves. It was up to us to go and put it right. The FA Cup is do or die."

On his goal: "Couldn't have hit it much better! It opened up and, thankfully, I hit it clean. We are delighted to get through now."

The appearance marked just Robertson's 14th start this season—a telling statistic given his pedigree and the performances he continues to produce. Summer signing Kerkez has leapfrogged him in the pecking order, yet Robertson handled the question of whether he feels he has something to prove with grace that likely masked deeper frustrations.

"I'm not sure if I have a point to prove in a Liverpool shirt," Robertson said. "The fans know I give everything in a Liverpool shirt. When you get on the pitch you just want to enjoy it. It is what it is. Milos is a fantastic left-back. He had an unbelievable season last season at Bournemouth. It took time to settle into a big club. The club has to move forward, the lads who have been here so long are not getting any younger. You have to accept it. I have had competition my whole career."

Yet Shearer wasn't buying the narrative that Kerkez has genuinely displaced Robertson through superior performances. "I am not sure Milos Kerkez has pushed Andy Robertson enough to be playing as much as he has done," Shearer said. "Kerkez has slightly improved, but Robertson is a great professional, and he probably can't say what he wants to say. He has been outstanding for Liverpool."

Danny Murphy agreed, sensing the frustration simmering beneath Robertson's diplomatic exterior. "I admire the way Andy Robertson spoke," Murphy said. "Deep down he will be fuming because he deserves to play more. That performance should keep his place."

With Champions League action against Galatasaray in Istanbul looming on Tuesday, the selection debate will only intensify.
