Tonali Signals Italian Return as Man City's Premier League Chase Falters

Sandro Tonali appears to have had a change of heart regarding his Newcastle future, with the Italian midfielder now leaning toward a homecoming rather than a switch to England's elite.

The 25-year-old has been one of the Magpies' standout performers this season, cementing his reputation as one of Europe's premier midfielders. However, Newcastle's failure to secure Champions League qualification looks set to force the club into the transfer market, with the sale of key assets necessary to maintain financial balance.

Interest in Tonali has been widespread since January, when he was offered to Arsenal on deadline day—though nothing materialised. Manchester City, Chelsea, Manchester United, and Italian heavyweights Juventus have all circled, with City believed to have moved swiftly to position themselves at the front of the queue.

Yet the midfielder's thinking has shifted. Rather than pursue a lucrative move to the Premier League, Tonali is now prioritising a return to Italian football, effectively closing the door on Arsenal and Chelsea's advances. AC Milan are reported to be leading the charge to bring him back, ahead of both Juventus and Inter Milan—a significant development that leaves England's top clubs nursing their disappointment.

City's early confidence in landing the midfielder has taken a hit as a result. While they attempted to get ahead of the competition, Tonali's camp have made clear that a switch back home remains the priority, despite the groundwork laid on English options.

Fabrizio Romano's recent assessment suggests City have multiple targets in their sights regardless. Alongside Tonali and Elliot Anderson, Enzo Fernández has been discussed internally, though City's interest in the Chelsea midfielder appears exploratory rather than concrete. The club gathered information on Fernández following developments in March but are not currently in active negotiations with either Chelsea or the player's representatives.
