The Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali has made his preference clear in the ongoing transfer saga, with Arsenal emerging as his destination of choice should the Gunners make a concrete move for the Italian international.

Tonali's future at St. James' Park appears increasingly uncertain following Newcastle's underwhelming 2025/26 campaign. Multiple heavyweight suitors have circled the 26-year-old, including Arsenal, Tottenham, and Manchester City, though Spurs have been the most aggressive in their pursuit thus far.

Tottenham's initial approach has already hit a wall. Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Roberto De Zerbi's side saw a £75 million bid rejected by Newcastle. The north London club, keen to work with the fellow Italian midfielder, are reportedly preparing a fresh offer, with Manchester City continuing to monitor developments.

However, the landscape shifts dramatically should Arsenal decide to make their move. According to reports, Tonali would significantly favour joining Mikel Arteta's project at Emirates Stadium over a switch to Tottenham. The Gunners, with sporting director Andrea Berta overseeing operations, are actively seeking midfield reinforcements and have maintained close attention on the Newcastle star's situation.

The prospect of Tonali choosing Spurs over Arsenal would represent a curious career trajectory. Pundit Alan Shearer was forthright in his assessment, noting that while London holds obvious appeal and De Zerbi's arrival provides intrigue, Tottenham's recent league finishes paint a worrying picture. "Tottenham just avoided relegation," Shearer remarked, highlighting how the club's positioning over the past two campaigns sits uncomfortably low for an ambitious midfielder of Tonali's calibre.

Gabriel Agbonlahor, speaking on talkSPORT, was equally sceptical of the Spurs move. The former Aston Villa striker questioned why an international footballer would consider dropping into a side that has finished 17th in back-to-back seasons, particularly when Champions League football should remain the baseline expectation for a player of Tonali's stature.

Newcastle are holding firm on valuation, with any deal likely to command a fee exceeding £100 million. The ball now sits in Arsenal's court should they wish to pursue the matter further.
