Van de Ven to Manchester United? Romano Dismisses Latest Transfer Chatter as Mere Speculation

The rumour mill has been working overtime regarding Tottenham's Micky van de Ven and Manchester United, but transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has moved swiftly to separate fact from fiction.

Van de Ven has established himself as one of Spurs' key performers since arriving in summer 2023, and his displays were instrumental in Tottenham's Europa League triumph last season. Yet with the club languishing in 16th place this term—just four points clear of the drop zone after 27 matches—questions have naturally arisen about whether key players might seek pastures new.

The Dutchman has caught the eye of several heavyweight suitors, including Manchester United, Liverpool, and Real Madrid. But according to Romano's latest assessment, the idea of United landing Van de Ven this summer lacks any real substance.

"I do not see Tottenham selling both of them," Romano stated, referring to Van de Ven and teammate Cristian Romero. "This would not be Tottenham's style, but there is obviously a lot of attention on the players because they are among the best centre-backs in the world. And so several clubs are following these situations."

On the specific United connection that has surfaced in recent days, the transfer correspondent was emphatic: "I'm not aware of anything really serious or concrete at this stage."

Recognising Van de Ven's quality is hardly controversial, Romano added. "Appreciating Micky van de Ven is absolutely normal because he is one of the best defenders around, so it's absolutely normal to have these kinds of stories involving many clubs."

The bigger picture at Old Trafford, however, suggests defensive recruitment may not be the priority. United's spending plans are tilted heavily towards midfield reinforcement, Romano explained. Whether the club pursues a centre-back will depend partly on Harry Maguire's future—specifically whether the England international remains or departs.

"Could Man Utd sign a defender? I think it's a possibility in the summer," Romano concluded. "But at the moment, for Micky van de Ven and United, there is nothing really serious or concrete."

Should Spurs suffer the unthinkable and drop into the Championship, an exodus involving Van de Ven and others would almost certainly follow. Real Madrid, having missed out on free-agent targets Dayot Upamecano and Marc Guehi, may well circle—though a move to either Manchester club would sting Lilywhite supporters far more.
