Liverpool Circle Jacquet as Chelsea's January Push Hits Wall at Rennes

Chelsea's attempts to land Rennes centre-back Jeremy Jacquet this month appear to have hit a brick wall, with the Ligue 1 club showing no appetite for a January departure despite personal terms already being thrashed out between player and Blues.

The 23-year-old has become one of the standout defensive talents in France and has naturally caught the eye of several Premier League heavyweights. For Chelsea, a defensive overhaul ranks among their priorities—alongside bolstering both goalkeeping and attack—if they're to mount a genuine title challenge across domestic and European competitions.

The west Londoners made a serious move for Jacquet this transfer window, with reports last week suggesting the player himself was on board. But negotiations have stalled spectacularly over valuation. Rennes are holding firm on a club record fee somewhere between €65m and €70m, while Chelsea have baulked at anything beyond €40m to €50m.

According to Fabrizio Romano's latest update, Rennes currently have "no intention" of letting their prized asset depart in January, though they've left a crack in the door for a summer exit. The twist? A deal could theoretically be agreed now, with the player arriving Stamford Bridge when the window reopens in the summer.

That scenario is beginning to look increasingly attractive to multiple suitors. Liverpool have joined the race alongside Bayern Munich, both sniffing around the prospect of tying Jacquet down to future terms before a formal transfer takes place.

"Rennes want to keep Jacquet in the January window," Romano explained on his YouTube channel. "They believe he can only leave for crazy money—they want a club record fee, around €65m or €70m. Chelsea only wanted to spend around €40m to €50m, so there is no agreement on the fee."

He continued: "But Rennes also insist on keeping the player now, and eventually agreeing to sell him for a summer move. This could be the possibility. So there's a chance for Jacquet to leave in the summer but agree the deal now."

With Chelsea, Liverpool, and Bayern all circling, the Breton outfit face an intriguing dilemma: hold out for maximum value in the summer window or risk losing their man to one of Europe's richest clubs willing to meet their asking price sooner rather than later.
