Real Madrid Seal Bernardo Silva Deal But Rodri Move Unlikely This Summer

Jose Mourinho's appointment as Real Madrid manager has sparked a summer spending spree at the Bernabeu, with the club moving swiftly to bolster their squad following Florentino Perez's election victory. But while fresh signings are arriving at the Spanish capital, a long-mooted pursuit appears to be shelved for now.

Madrid have already secured Ibrahima Konate on a free transfer after his Liverpool contract ran down, and they've agreed to activate Denzel Dumfries' £17m release clause to bring the Inter Milan defender to Spain. Now they've added another Manchester City asset to their roster.

Bernardo Silva has completed his switch to the Bernabeu after opting against extending his stay at the Etihad. The Portuguese midfielder has penned a two-year contract with a one-year option, with the deal concluded in rapid fashion after Madrid initiated talks just 36 hours earlier. Mourinho was keen on the former City man, and the move represents a significant coup for the newly-appointed boss.

The signing of Bernardo addresses Mourinho's desire for a creative midfielder, though the Madrid hierarchy had previously cast their net wider. Paris Saint-Germain's Joao Neves and Vitinha were identified as standout targets, yet both remain financially out of reach. Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez carries a £120m price tag that proves prohibitive, while West Ham's Mateus Fernandes looks destined for Manchester United, who are pushing hard to complete an £85m deal for the Brazilian.

Mourinho is also hunting for defensive reinforcements, specifically a left-back capable of playing centrally. Arsenal's Riccardo Calafiori and Manchester City's Josko Gvardiol have attracted attention, with the latter to compete alongside Alvaro Carreras.

As for Rodri, however, the Etihad midfielder's anticipated move to Madrid appears to have been shelved. With just one year remaining on his contract at City, the Spanish international remains an obvious target for the ambitious Perez—yet Fabrizio Romano reports that Madrid are not expected to pursue the former Ballon d'Or winner this summer. The club's priority lies elsewhere, and the onus now falls on Rodri to decide whether to commit to a fresh City deal or wait until 2027, when he can depart as a free agent.

Rodri himself has played down the speculation surrounding his future, insisting he remains focused on matters at hand. Speaking ahead of Spain's World Cup clash against Cape Verde on Monday, the midfielder told Cadena Ser: "To be honest, I've been keeping a bit of a distance. It's true that things come up, but in the end, I don't really know where they're coming from. I try to focus on what I have to do now."

He added: "I understand that it's part of the game and what we do. Every time your name comes up, we accept it as such, but I haven't thought about it and I'm not making any decisions. My focus is on the World Cup. I'm still under contract with my club, where I think we've had a good season. That's my situation right now."
