Real Madrid Pull Off U-Turn to Land Konate on Free Transfer After Liverpool Exit

Real Madrid have executed a dramatic change of heart over Ibrahima Konate, with transfer insider Fabrizio Romano confirming a "verbal agreement" is now in place between the Spanish club and the Liverpool centre-back.
Konate's departure from Anfield was confirmed by Liverpool last month, with his contract expiring at the end of June. The defender's stock at the club has plummeted considerably this term—a far cry from his assured displays alongside Virgil van Dijk in the previous campaign. The 2025/26 season proved particularly difficult for the Frenchman, who endured what many observers considered his poorest showing in a red shirt during what has been a torrid year for the Merseyside outfit overall.
Liverpool had pursued fresh terms with Konate throughout the campaign, but his impending departure leaves them scrambling for defensive reinforcements.
The Saudi Pro League had been circling, but Konate has shelved those approaches in favour of a move to the Bernabéu.
Early in the season, it appeared certain that Konate would follow Trent Alexander-Arnold's path to Madrid on a free transfer. Yet as the campaign unfolded, reports emerged suggesting the Spanish giants had cooled their interest, citing his disappointing form as a stumbling block.
That narrative has now shifted entirely. Romano's Tuesday announcement detailed a four-year contract proposal, though proceedings hinge on one crucial factor: the re-election of Florentino Pérez as Real Madrid president.
"BREAKING: Real Madrid have verbal agreement in place with Ibrahima Konaté! Four year deal to be signed, depending on if/when Florentino Pérez is re-elected. Here we go, expected right after," Romano posted.
Journalist Ben Jacobs provided additional context, noting that while the move isn't anticipated to materialise until after the presidential election, Real Madrid have done their groundwork. "Real well-positioned having already discussed terms last year. Talks resumed in the last few days," he explained, suggesting the club is prepared to move swiftly once the political hurdles are cleared.
Defensive overhaul remains a priority for Real Madrid this summer, and securing Konate on a free transfer would represent shrewd business in that regard—provided the presidential vote falls in their favour.
