Tonali in Arsenal's Summer Sights as Romano Confirms Genuine Gunners Interest

The transfer rumour mill has been working overtime around Sandro Tonali, and now Fabrizio Romano has waded in to confirm that Arsenal are indeed keeping a close eye on the Newcastle midfielder for a potential summer move.

The Italian's future has been the subject of considerable speculation in recent weeks, with initial reports from Florian Plettenberg suggesting the Gunners had designs on landing the 25-year-old before the January deadline came and went. What followed was the usual transfer window chaos: conflicting stories, denials, counter-denials, and enough confusion to make your head spin.

Ben Jacobs insisted Arsenal had made no approach, with Newcastle equally adamant they weren't entertaining any offers. Then David Ornstein weighed in with claims that Tonali's representatives had dangled him in front of the Gunners, only for the player's agent Giuseppe Riso to pour cold water on the lot of it.

Riso told Sky Sport Italia that while Newcastle had no intention of selling in January, the club would be open to discussions "around March" about the midfielder's future – provided the Magpies decided to entertain offers at all. He was equally dismissive of any notion that talks with Arsenal were underway, though he pointedly didn't rule out future conversations.

Now Romano has provided some clarity, suggesting that the real action will unfold over the coming months rather than in the frantic final hours of the winter market. Speaking on his YouTube channel, the transfer guru confirmed Arsenal are actively considering a move for Tonali, though he stressed there's nothing imminent while Newcastle hold all the cards.

"In the summer, keep an eye on Tonali," Romano explained. "We will tell you more soon, but there is Juventus interested, there are Premier League top clubs interested, so I am sure for Tonali, the summer is going to be busy, very busy."

He added that the real negotiations are likely to happen between late February and April, when Newcastle's hierarchy will sit down with the player's camp to assess their options. Until then, it's a waiting game.

Tonali himself has given little away about his intentions, though he's hardly ruled out a move. Back in November, when quizzed about his Newcastle future, the Italy international spoke candidly about taking things "year on year" and admitted that while he's currently content at St James' Park, football has a habit of throwing curveballs.

"This is a tough question because in football you need to think year on year," Tonali said. "I don't want to say, 'I want to stay here 10 years', and in two, three, four, five years I will go. I want to think, just for me, year on year. Last summer was tough for us, for Alex, but this is football. If you have an option for your life, for another team, you need to think about everything. But now I'm happy here. I don't think anything about another team."

It's a carefully measured response – the sort of thing players say when they're genuinely settled but not about to commit their life away. With Juventus also sniffing around and other English heavyweights watching from the wings, the summer could indeed prove a busy one for the Magpies' midfield star.
