Richards and Shearer Back Jesus to Lead Arsenal Line Against United

Micah Richards and Alan Shearer are united in their view that Arsenal need a fresh approach up front, with both pundits suggesting Gabriel Jesus should get the nod ahead of Viktor Gyokeres when the Gunners face Manchester United this weekend.

Gyokeres arrived at the Emirates last summer from Sporting Lisbon in a deal valued at approximately £64m, arriving with considerable fanfare as the answer to Arsenal's persistent striker woes. The Swedish international, however, has failed to deliver on that promise and his Premier League campaign has been decidedly underwhelming.

The numbers tell a damning story: just one goal in his last ten league outings. Beyond the statistics, his all-round contribution has left observers wanting. His movement lacks the sharpness that characterised his performances in Portugal, and his adaptation to English football has been painfully slow.

The most recent example came over the weekend when Arsenal drew a blank against Nottingham Forest. Gyokeres lasted only 57 minutes before being withdrawn, another performance that underlined the growing concerns about his suitability to the task.

Richards outlined his thinking on The Rest is Football podcast: "I think they need to play Gabriel Jesus now," he said. "Mikel Arteta has stuck with Gyokeres – I'm not sure if he's struggling with confidence or struggling to adapt to a new league, I know he's played in the Championship but the Premier League is a different beast."

The former Manchester City defender reflected on what he'd observed of Gyokeres before his move. "All of the clips I watched of Gyokeres last season, I remember saying that Arsenal fans shouldn't expect him to be a world-beater but what he did have was that aggressive run in behind," Richards continued.

"But he's not doing the same thing now and that worries me. Maybe he needs a couple of games out of the team and to get his confidence back before coming back in."

Richards identified a telling moment during the Forest encounter where Gyokeres should have capitalised on an opening. "There was a moment against Forest where he should have gone through but as a defender you think you can get back because he's lacking confidence and his touch isn't going to be right," he explained. "Even if he went through you're not fancying him to score at the minute."

The absence of a defining moment – a goal that might spark a resurgence – has compounded the striker's struggles. "I know he scored in the cup game but there's not been a big moment for him yet where he's scored an unbelievable goal to give him the confidence that he's going to go on a run," Richards said.

His solution? A tactical reset. "Maybe take him out of the firing line for a little bit and then bringing him back in might be the best thing for the team."

Shearer echoed those sentiments with characteristic bluntness. "I thought Gyokeres was disappointing, he didn't offer enough," the Match of the Day pundit remarked.

The former Newcastle striker highlighted a specific moment that exemplified the problem. "There was a moment in the first half when he was one v one with a defender and I was waiting for him to knock the ball across him to make the defender foul him," Shearer said. "But he just couldn't get away with him, he looked very leggy. I was really surprised at how he let the defender control the situation."

Gary Lineker voiced his agreement with Richards' assessment, adding weight to the growing consensus that a change is needed at the tip of Arsenal's attack.

With the £45m Jesus available as an alternative, the case for rotation appears increasingly compelling.
