Gabriel's Penalty Miss Sparks Debate Over Arsenal's Shootout Selection

Arsenal's Champions League final heartbreak in Budapest has sparked fresh scrutiny over penalty-taking decisions, with Micah Richards suggesting a different approach might have changed the outcome.

PSG claimed back-to-back European crowns after a tense shootout settled the affair following a 1-1 draw in extra-time. The decisive moment came when Gabriel blazed over the bar, confirming the Gunners' fate. David Raya did save Nuno Mendes' effort, but Eberechi Eze's wayward strike proved costly in the end.

The north London side wasted little time heading home, catching a 2am flight to celebrate their first Premier League title in over two decades with a capital parade. Yet the celebrations carried an unmistakable undertone of what-might-have-been.

Thierry Henry raised eyebrows at Gabriel's positioning in the penalty order on CBS Sports, acknowledging the centre-back's outstanding display whilst questioning the selection itself. "I don't know why he went, I don't know how he arrived to be the fifth guy but he went," Henry reflected.

Richards, discussing the shootout with Gary Lineker on The Rest Is Football, painted a revealing picture of Gabriel's approach to the spot. The former Manchester City defender observed something troubling in the Arsenal man's demeanour as he stepped forward.

"When he was running up and taking it, he didn't look confident," Richards explained. "It's almost like he just wanted to get it over and done with."

Richards noted that a teammate had predicted precisely what would unfold—a powerful strike sailing over the bar. Yet he reserved genuine praise for Gabriel's willingness to shoulder the responsibility.

The crux of Richards' argument centred on technical ability and positioning. He advocated for bringing Madueke into the conversation, describing the winger as a "technician" better equipped to handle the pressure.

"I would have liked to have seen Madueke take one, a technician," Richards said. "I know it's easy saying that after the event but that's why you've got the players—they have better technique, they play in forward positions because they have better technique. Even if you're nervous your probability is higher if you're more technical."

Keen to avoid controversy, Richards stressed he wasn't criticising Madueke. Rather, he emphasised that teams should prioritise their most technically gifted players when constructing a shootout lineup.

"I just think if you've got technical players on the pitch then you give yourself a better chance, that's all," he concluded.
