Rooney Pinpoints England's Attacking Vulnerability as Rice's Limitations Exposed Against Ghana

England's contrasting performances in their opening World Cup matches have laid bare a potential weakness in their setup. The emphatic 4-2 victory over Croatia showcased the Three Lions' attacking prowess, but the toothless 0-0 stalemate with Ghana revealed uncomfortable truths about their ability to unlock stubborn defences.

Just three shots on target against Ghana told the story of an England side that couldn't find the key to break down a resolute opponent—a concern that had circled pre-tournament discussions about whether this squad possessed sufficient quality for the tournament's trickier moments.

Wayne Rooney has seized on this vulnerability, making a pointed observation during BBC coverage. The former Manchester United striker believes Thomas Tuchel's decision to omit two creative talents now looks questionable. "These games are more difficult than matches against better teams that play more expansively," Rooney explained. "There's more space. When you face a side sitting deep like Ghana, that's when you need a Phil Foden or a Cole Palmer—clever players who can operate in confined areas."

Rooney's critique touched on Rice's limitations in this specific context. While acknowledging the midfielder's considerable strengths, he suggested Rice lacks the technical dexterity required to unpick congested defences. "Declan has tremendous qualities, but getting into those tight spaces and linking play—that's where you probably need a Foden or a Palmer," he added.

However, pinpointing Rice as the problem oversimplifies matters. The England squad contains other attacking talents who failed to make an impression against Ghana. Jude Bellingham, Morgan Rogers, Marcus Rashford, Noni Madueke, and Bukayo Saka all featured, yet none broke through the Ghanaian wall, despite Saka forcing a decent save. Had Foden or Palmer been available, they'd likely operate alongside Rice rather than replace him, with the midfielder's distribution actually capable of launching attacking moves.

Still, Rooney's broader point carries weight. England could justifiably have squeezed in at least one of these attacking specialists. Palmer's Euro 2024 pedigree proved decisive—he assisted in the semi-final against the Netherlands and scored in the final against Spain. That sort of match-winning capability could prove invaluable when tournaments tighten up.
