Perez Chases Barcelona's Pedri as Madrid Dream of Another Clasico Heist

Real Madrid's hierarchy, led by president Florentino Perez, have set their sights on Barcelona's Pedri as a potential summer acquisition, according to Spanish broadcaster Radio Marca.

The 23-year-old midfielder stands among the world's elite at his position and remains a cornerstone of Barcelona's current setup. His credentials speak volumes: 235 competitive appearances in the Blaugrana shirt, 28 goals and 31 assists to his name, plus two LaLiga titles and two Copa del Rey trophies. The Spanish international was instrumental in his country's Euro 2024 triumph.

Journalist Roberto Gomez revealed Perez's ambitions on Radio Marca, stating: "The player that Real Madrid, their president, would like to sign is a midfielder… and his name is Pedri."

When questioned about the remote likelihood of such a transfer materialising, Gomez delivered a pointed observation: "I don't know… there has never been a Barcelona player who has signed for Real Madrid." His tongue-in-cheek remark overlooked historical precedent—Bernd Schuster, Miquel Soler and Luis Milla have all completed the switch in previous decades. Most notably, Luis Figo's blockbuster move in 2000 remains the gold standard of cross-city transfers, occurring during Perez's previous tenure in charge.

"The player Florentino Perez and Real Madrid would like is Pedri," Gomez reiterated, before tempering expectations with characteristic dry wit: "What you like is one thing, what you can do is another."

The reality remains unpalatable for Madrid's ambitions. Barcelona would scarcely countenance selling such a prized asset to their fiercest rivals, whilst Pedri himself would harbour little enthusiasm for swapping Camp Nou for the Bernabéu.

This is not the first occasion Pedri's name has surfaced in Madrid's orbit. Back in May 2025, reports emerged that incoming manager Xabi Alonso had identified the Canary Islander as a potential fit for his system. Yet those same sources acknowledged the move was fanciful at best—Alonso understood the operation was simply unfeasible, not least because Pedri had previously rejected Madrid's advances.

Madrid's summer recruitment drive has been well-publicised, with Rodri of Manchester City and Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez among their stated targets. Whether Pedri genuinely features in their realistic shopping list remains another matter entirely.
