Madrid Eye Dumfries Swoop as Konate Deal Sealed, Mourinho's Double Defensive Raid Emerges

Real Madrid are plotting an ambitious summer raid that could see them land two defensive reinforcements, with Liverpool facing the prospect of losing targets to the Spanish giants.

The Bernabeu outfit have moved decisively for Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate, with Fabrizio Romano confirming a verbal agreement is in place for a free transfer. The four-year deal hinges on Florentino Pérez's re-election as club president, with the announcement expected to follow once that vote concludes. Konate has reportedly put Saudi offers on hold to pursue the Madrid opportunity.

That capture appears to be merely the first piece of Jose Mourinho's defensive jigsaw as the newly appointed head coach sets about reconstructing Madrid's backline following a disappointing 2025/26 campaign.

The Athletic reports that Madrid have made Inter Milan's Denzel Dumfries their primary target to shore up the right-back position. The 30-year-old Dutch international boasts a €25 million (£21m) release clause in his current contract, making a summer exit entirely feasible. Sources suggest personal terms present no obstacle to a deal materialising.

Dumfries has emerged as one of Serie A's standout performers in his position since arriving at the San Siro, and has attracted considerable interest from Premier League clubs in recent transfer windows. Liverpool, under incoming boss Andoni Iraola, have identified him as a priority signing to bolster their right-back options.

However, Madrid appear positioned to gazump the Anfield club. According to reports, Mourinho's side plan to wrap up the Dumfries transfer once the presidential election concludes on Sunday, provided Pérez secures victory as anticipated. The club is pursuing both defensive deals as part of a comprehensive squad rebuild.

The twin acquisitions would represent a significant statement of intent from Madrid, though they represent a considerable shift in recruitment strategy given both players' respective Premier League connections.
