Real Madrid Ready to Tempt Spurs Captain Romero with Eye-Watering Bid

Real Madrid are preparing to test Tottenham's resolve with a mammoth financial package to prise away Cristian Romero, who has made clear his displeasure with the club's direction.

The Argentine centre-back, a standout performer since arriving from Atalanta in summer 2021, is increasingly disenchanted with Spurs' failure to make meaningful strides in the Premier League. His frustration boiled over following Wednesday's 3-2 home loss to Bournemouth, when he took to Instagram to criticise the club's hierarchy for their absence during difficult periods.

"At times like this, it should be other people coming out to speak, but they don't – as has been happening for several years now," Romero posted. "They only show up when things are going well, to tell a few lies."

Tottenham's plight provides the backdrop to his discontent. Thomas Frank's arrival in the summer was meant to spark a revival following Ange Postecoglou's Europa League-winning tenure, yet Spurs languish in 14th place after 21 matches and crashed out of the FA Cup to Aston Villa on Saturday. The contrast between squad quality and on-pitch performance has left supporters and players alike exasperated.

Romero has signalled that unless Spurs demonstrate genuine ambition—specifically through substantial investment in elite reinforcements—he will formally request a transfer before June. Despite his reservations about the ownership structure, the World Cup winner has praised Frank's coaching methods as exemplary, believing the issue lies with backing rather than tactical acumen.

Real Madrid's interest has intensified accordingly. The La Liga powerhouses are prepared to offer up to €80million (approximately £69.4m) to secure the Spurs skipper, whom Xabi Alonso views as the archetypal centre-back his system demands. Alonso has already given his blessing to the move as Madrid seek reinforcements in defence, with Antonio Rudiger and David Alaba departing when their contracts expire.

Madrid's shopping list also includes Romero's defensive partner Micky van de Ven, Bayern Munich's Dayot Upamecano, and Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi. The latter is expected to depart Selhurst Park this year, either on a free transfer come summer or for around £40m in the January window.

Romero's dominance against Bournemouth—winning 21 duels, the most by any player in a Premier League fixture this season and Tottenham's best in a decade—underscores what Madrid would be acquiring: a defender at the peak of his powers, precisely the type of talent to anchor a title-chasing side.
