Alonso's spell at the Bernabéu proved troubled from the outset. Los Blancos' underlying issues persisted from Carlo Ancelotti's disappointing campaign last season, when the arrival of Kylian Mbappe failed to deliver the necessary balance and silverware dried up entirely. Those same structural problems followed Alonso into this term, compounded by reported friction with key personnel including Vinicius Junior.

The numbers tell their own story. Madrid sit fourth in La Liga, trailing leaders Barcelona by four points after 19 matches, whilst their Champions League group phase position sits at seventh. The Copa del Rey remains available, but Sunday's Super Cup exit represented a significant blow to a season already veering off course.

Speculation over Alonso's future had mounted following that Barcelona result, with Jurgen Klopp and Zinedine Zidane among the names circulating. Yet the solution, it appears, was closer to home.

Álvaro Arbeloa, who has overseen Real Madrid's Castilla outfit since June 2025, has been promoted to the first-team hotseat. The former Liverpool defender has spent his entire coaching career within Madrid's academy structure since 2020, progressing through various age groups with considerable success. He claimed the league title with Infantil A in 2020-2021, managed the Cadete A side in 2021-2022, and led Juvenil A from 2022 onwards—a period that included a treble in 2022-2023 (League, Copa del Rey, and Champions Cup) and the league crown in 2024-2025.

Reports indicate Arbeloa had fielded approaches from other clubs but deliberately held firm, anticipating precisely this opportunity. His intimate knowledge of the club, combined with his track record developing young talent and maintaining high standards within the dressing room, aligns with what Madrid's hierarchy seeks at this juncture.
