The plot thickens in the summer transfer saga. Real Madrid's much-publicised €150m approach for Atletico Madrid's Julian Alvarez wasn't what it seemed—according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, it was all smoke and mirrors masking the club's genuine ambition.

Alvarez's release clause sits at a frankly absurd €500m, though journalist Ben Jacobs suggests the 26-year-old could depart for considerably less. Jacobs noted that Atletico's CEO Miguel Ángel Gil and former sporting director Andrea Berta inserted provisions allowing Alvarez to leave below his official release clause when he joined from Manchester City in 2024. The Argentine remains contracted until 2030.

Yet the real story concerns Bayern Munich's Michael Olise. Romano insists the Frenchman was always Florentino Pérez's 'galáctico' obsession, with the Alvarez bid serving merely as a distraction. "The 'galáctico' Florentino Pérez spoke about was and has always been Michael Olise," Romano stated. "The name of the Frenchman has been mentioned in Real Madrid meetings these days and weeks. Olise remains the dream of Real Madrid."

Bayern's position has been crystal clear. Club president Herbert Hainer told Bild: "Michael Olise is a Bayern Munich player who still has a long-term contract – and we are not a club that sells players. If Florentino Perez wants to send us an offer – which hasn't happened yet – he can save himself the trouble."

Yet resolve, as ever, can be tested with sufficient financial firepower. Marca reports Real Madrid are now preparing to test Bayern's resolve with an audacious package potentially reaching €220m. The club still has €150m readily available but recognises prising the former Crystal Palace winger away from the Bundesliga giants will demand considerably more—likely exceeding €200m.

For now, Olise remains focused on France's World Cup commitments. How Bayern respond once that tournament concludes remains the question that will define this window.
