Real Madrid Float Blockbuster Szoboszlai-Rodrygo Swap as Liverpool Eye Summer Overhaul

Real Madrid have tabled a proposal for a potential summer exchange with Liverpool centring on Dominik Szoboszlai and Rodrygo, according to reports.

Liverpool's recent upturn in form—including a narrow 1-0 success at Nottingham Forest—has seen them claim five victories from their last six outings across all competitions. Yet the defending champions remain firmly adrift in the Premier League title race, languishing sixth after 27 matches under Arne Slot.

With their championship ambitions extinguished, the Reds' focus has shifted towards salvaging a top-four berth whilst mounting credible campaigns in both the Champions League and FA Cup.

Szoboszlai has emerged as one of Liverpool's standout performers despite the campaign's disappointments, frequently deployed across multiple positions including right-back. The attacking midfielder has accumulated ten goals and six assists this season, attracting the Spanish giants' attention.

Hungary national team boss Marco Rossi recently disclosed that Szoboszlai harbours ambitions of eventually donning a Real Madrid shirt. Speaking to Qatari outlet Winwin, Rossi highlighted the midfielder's long-standing dream: "From what I have heard and what I know, and because of the very good and direct relationship I have had with Dominik since he started playing football as a child, Real Madrid was his dream. Dominik, ever since he started playing football, has had one dream, which is to play for Real Madrid."

Yet Szoboszlai's representative, Matyas Esterhazy, struck a different tone last week, insisting his client remains focused on Liverpool's immediate challenges. Speaking to Hungary's NB1, Esterhazy stated: "It's completely normal for the public, when Dominik is performing like this, to talk about what's next and if there's something higher. For us it's not a topic. We are mid-season; he has a lot of work ahead of him in the Premier League, the FA Cup and the Champions League. He has said many times how important this competition is for him. So at the moment to talk about what will happen in the summer in my opinion is not correct. Not to mention, Liverpool are one of the biggest clubs in the world and Dominik is in a position within the team that has a lot of reserve. So we are not looking outside or elsewhere."

Nevertheless, Spanish outlet Fichajes claims Real Madrid are proposing a 'bombshell swap' whereby Rodrygo would arrive at Anfield whilst Szoboszlai heads to the Bernabéu. The Hungarian's dribbling prowess, long-range shooting accuracy, and tactical flexibility—having operated in deeper midfield roles when required—represent precisely what Carlo Ancelotti's side covet.

Liverpool have long tracked Rodrygo and view his acquisition as a potential contingency should Mohamed Salah's future become uncertain this summer. The report suggests such an arrangement remains theoretically possible, though substantial complications loom large. Szoboszlai holds considerable importance within Slot's setup, making his exit a thorny proposition from a sporting standpoint. Equally, Real Madrid would resist surrendering Rodrygo without adequate compensation, recognising the Brazilian's considerable potential and commercial value. Any agreement would require careful financial engineering from both parties should negotiations progress.
