Pochettino Emerges as Madrid's Prime Target While Spurs Face Managerial Uncertainty

The Madrid managerial merry-go-round shows no signs of slowing. With Xabi Alonso's sacking in January following that Spanish Super Cup final defeat to Barcelona still fresh, and Alvaro Arbeloa's appointment looking increasingly makeshift, the Spanish giants are already scouting replacements.

Mauricio Pochettino has emerged as a leading contender for the role, according to reports reaching ESPN. The USMNT boss sits prominently on Madrid's shortlist, with president Florentino Pérez understood to regard him highly as the club plots a fresh sporting direction.

Arbeloa, it seems, was never viewed as a permanent fixture. Two defeats in their last three La Liga outings have merely accelerated the inevitable, with sources suggesting he'd need something approaching divine intervention to salvage his position.

The field of potential successors had already grown crowded. Jurgen Klopp, Unai Emery, Jose Mourinho, and Zinedine Zidane all featured in earlier speculation. Yet Zidane's stock has taken a considerable hit. Reports suggest the Frenchman is edging towards accepting the France national team role after the World Cup, effectively closing the door on a nostalgic return to the Bernabeu.

For Tottenham, the timing couldn't be more awkward. Pochettino remains their most obvious managerial solution, yet his potential availability depends partly on whether Spurs can avoid the unthinkable. Hovering just a point above the relegation zone, another season in the Championship would render the Argentine's appointment impossible.

The club's situation has grown genuinely precarious. Thomas Frank's departure saw Igor Tudor installed as interim manager, though the Croatian has managed to lose all three of his opening matches—hardly the foundation upon which to rebuild.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano offered a sobering assessment of Pochettino's Tottenham prospects. With the Argentine fully committed to steering the USMNT through their World Cup campaign, Romano suggested a 40 per cent probability of a summer move to north London, with Roberto De Zerbi occupying similar odds. A further 20 per cent remains allocated to other potential candidates who might yet emerge.

"Pochettino is completely focused on the USMNT," Romano explained. "He's aware of interest from Tottenham and knows the supporters still sing his name. But right now, it's all about the World Cup in America."
