Mourinho Eyes Real Madrid Return but Demands Full Sporting Control

Real Madrid appear set on a reunion with Jose Mourinho as they hunt for a new manager to replace Alvaro Arbeloa, with the veteran tactician emerging as Florentino Perez's preferred choice for the hotseat.

According to David Ornstein's latest reporting, Madrid have already entered into talks regarding Mourinho's potential return, with the Portuguese boss currently managing Benfica. While Mourinho is reportedly content at the Lisbon club, he remains open to the possibility of a switch back to the Bernabeu.

Agent Jorge Mendes is actively working on behalf of the 63-year-old, with negotiations ongoing between the two camps. However, there remains no formal club-to-club dialogue at present. Should an agreement be reached, Madrid would need to pay a release fee of approximately €3 million to prise Mourinho away from Portugal. His existing Benfica contract runs until June 2027, though it contains a clause permitting his departure within the first 10 days following the Portuguese season's conclusion if the buyout sum is satisfied.

The need for a managerial change at Madrid has become increasingly apparent. Arbeloa has found the role increasingly untenable since stepping into Xabi Alonso's shoes, with the club's squad proving notoriously difficult to manage. Recent tensions between Federico Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni have illustrated just how fractious the dressing room atmosphere has become, leaving successive managers vulnerable to losing control.

Mourinho's experience and commanding presence make him an attractive proposition to restore order. His track record of commanding respect from elite players aligns with what Madrid desperately need at this juncture.

Though Klopp and Pochettino have also been linked with the vacancy, Perez has seemingly settled on Mourinho as his man. Yet according to German journalist Patrick Berger, the Special One has attached a significant condition to any agreement. Mourinho is understood to be keen on the move but insists on complete control over sporting decisions. Vice-president Jose Angel Sanchez has been pushing hard for the reunion following conversations with Mourinho's representatives this week.

The final decision, of course, rests with Perez—whether the Madrid chief is willing to hand over the keys to the kingdom remains the burning question.
