Real Madrid Tempt Konate with €15m Bonus as Liverpool Defender Eyes Anfield Exit

The continental pull is proving strong for Ibrahima Konate. Real Madrid have reportedly dangled a substantial carrot in front of the Liverpool centre-back, with club president Florentino Perez willing to sweeten a deal with a €15 million signing bonus as the Frenchman's contract winds down at Anfield.

Konate's situation has become something of a saga as his current terms approach expiration this summer. Liverpool have already tabled what they consider their most competitive renewal proposal, with improved wages on offer to keep the defender at the club. Yet the lure of the Bernabéu appears to be proving difficult to resist.

According to reports emanating from Spain, insiders believe Konate has effectively made his decision to leave Liverpool following five seasons on Merseyside, during which he has collected Premier League, FA Cup, and two League Cup medals.

Manager Arne Slot addressed the ongoing negotiations last month, offering a measured perspective on the impasse. "We are in talks with him so that tells you what we want," Slot explained. "It's clear we would like him to stay but negotiations are ongoing so let's see where that ends. We wouldn't be in negotiations if we didn't want him to stay."

The Liverpool boss acknowledged Konate's recent form fluctuations. "Ibou has had a very good spell recently," Slot continued. "He had a lot of good games earlier in the season but then he was also part of the reason why we conceded a goal. His general performances were good but then a small mistake he made immediately led to a goal and so he was judged differently."

Slot emphasised the defensive partnership Konate has forged with Virgil van Dijk. "He is having a very good partnership with Virgil since I've been here and, just like Virgil, he has always been fit," the manager said. "These two are vital for us, not only because of the quality they have but because of the lack of options we have behind."

Former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness is convinced Konate's departure is already written in stone. Speaking to Football Insider, Wyness predicted the 25-year-old will depart this summer and suggested his performances will likely improve markedly in the closing months of the season as his focus shifts to securing a move.

"He will be off, and I think it will be the right thing," Wyness stated. "You'll see him play in a very good second part of the season. He will be coming back to the form that had Real Madrid and all the others looking at him, and he'll start to show up really well."

Wyness attributed this anticipated uptick to the psychological shift that often accompanies contract expiration. "I've seen it so many times with players when they come towards the end of that contract," he explained. "Suddenly, that effort is now at 110% rather than the 90% that you've seen at the start of the season."

The former executive also highlighted the broader implications for Liverpool's backline, noting that a defensive reshuffle will likely follow. "Jacquet is obviously the answer to that solution and it'll be a change of the guard at the back," Wyness suggested, before raising questions about the future of van Dijk himself. "Now Virgil van Dijk is going to be the interesting one as well. Will there be a replacement coming in as well? Because there's no doubt he's coming to the end of his days as well."
