Mourinho Blocks Tchouameni Exit as Man Utd Pursue Midfield Overhaul

Manchester United's quest to reshape their midfield this summer has hit a significant stumbling block, with incoming Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho making clear his intention to retain Aurelien Tchouameni.

The Old Trafford outfit have already secured Ederson Silva from Atalanta and are eyeing up to three midfield reinforcements during the window. Tchouameni, the 26-year-old Madrid stalwart, had been earmarked as a potential marquee signing—internally considered a potential successor to Casemiro in United's engine room.

However, Mourinho's appointment at the Bernabeu means those doors have firmly shut. The Portuguese tactician, set to replace Alvaro Arbeloa once Florentino Perez's re-election as Real president is formally ratified, views Tchouameni as central to his rebuilding project rather than a commodity to be shifted. The midfielder's substantial wages further complicate any prospective deal.

Real Madrid themselves are undergoing significant restructuring, having already brought in Ibrahima Konate and Denzel Dumfries whilst preparing for a fresh era under Mourinho following back-to-back trophy-less campaigns.

The setback appears unlikely to derail United's midfield ambitions entirely. The club have reportedly made substantial progress in their pursuit of Newcastle's Sandro Tonali, the Italian international, having allegedly surpassed both Arsenal and Manchester City in the race for his signature with what's been described as a significant financial package.
