Mourinho Set to Shake Things Up at Real Madrid with Fresh Striker Hunt

Real Madrid's managerial merry-go-round is about to turn again, with Jose Mourinho preparing to take the reins after a chaotic 2025/26 campaign. Florentino Perez sacked Xabi Alonso in January and handed the job to Alvaro Arbeloa, but the interim boss is now heading for the exit after confirming this weekend's match against Athletic Bilbao will be his last.

Arbeloa's departure was dignified if melancholic. "I'm leaving Real Madrid with a great deal of gratitude towards my players," he reflected. "They've made me a better person, helped me enjoy every day, taught me a great deal, and made me a better manager today than I was on January 12."

The 43-year-old also expressed his appreciation to club president Perez and general director Jose Angel Sanchez, before hinting at a possible return down the line. "I'm leaving with many friends, feeling very happy, and I hope that one day I can return," he said. "I hope it's just a temporary farewell; I've always considered Madrid my home. I've been part of Real Madrid for 20 years — I'll always consider it my home."

The big question now centres on what Mourinho will do to arrest Real Madrid's alarming decline. Los Blancos have endured back-to-back seasons without a trophy, and the fanbase has grown restless—particularly with Kylian Mbappe, who was booed when introduced as a substitute in a 2-0 victory over Real Oviedo.

Mbappe has become something of a convenient scapegoat. Over 30 million people even signed a petition calling for his sale after he jetted off to Sardinia to recover from a hamstring issue. Yet the Frenchman insists he's fit and ready. "I'm 100 per cent fine," he declared post-match. "I didn't play because the coach told me I'm the fourth-choice forward in the squad behind Mastantuono, Vinícius Júnior and Gonzalo. I accept it and play the time I'm given."

Mbappe acknowledged his need to step up his performance levels. "I was ready to start, it's his decision and it always has to be respected. I have no problem at all with Arbeloa. You have to accept the coach's philosophy and I have to do better to play ahead of Vini, Gonzalo and Mastantuono."

Now comes the curveball. According to reports, Mourinho is already plotting to bring in an additional centre-forward to either replace or compete with Mbappe. Victor Osimhen from Galatasaray and Juventus' Dusan Vlahovic are understood to be Real Madrid's primary targets, with Osimhen the preferred option.

"This desire to recruit a new striker is not good news for Kylian Mbappe, who will have competition for his place," the reports suggest. "It's also bad news for other players like Endrick. But Mourinho wants to create more competition to help Real Madrid return to the top."

So much for a fresh start. Mourinho's arrival may well intensify the pressure cooker at the Bernabeu rather than ease it.
