Mourinho's Madrid Return Edges Closer as Perez Backs Managerial Shake-Up; Eight Players Face Exit

Jose Mourinho appears set for an astonishing return to the Bernabeu, with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez identified as the driving force behind a managerial overhaul at the Spanish club.

The Benfica boss has emerged as Perez's leading target to succeed Alvaro Arbeloa, whose struggles this season have left Madrid without silverware for a second consecutive year. Arbeloa's appointment earlier this year to replace Xabi Alonso has failed to arrest the club's decline, and the writing appears firmly on the wall for the inexperienced tactician.

Mourinho's credentials at the Bernabeu are well-established. Between 2010 and 2013, the Portuguese manager lifted three trophies during his first spell in charge, before moving on to Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur. His track record suggests he remains a heavyweight operator in European football.

According to reports, Perez is now the principal advocate for bringing Mourinho back to the club, though not all voices within the hierarchy share his enthusiasm. The president's influence proved decisive in this process, marking a shift from the appointment of Alonso, which was orchestrated by general manager Jose Angel Sanchez and merely rubber-stamped by Perez.

Mourinho himself has indicated his willingness to make the move, with the current Benfica boss among four candidates under consideration. However, his Portuguese employers are keen to retain him, with a €6 million gross release clause operative only until the final days of May. That window provides Real Madrid with a narrow timeframe to conclude negotiations.

Transfer market guru Fabrizio Romano confirmed the momentum around Mourinho's potential switch, noting that Perez will ultimately make the final call on the managerial appointment.

Any incoming manager should not expect a spending spree. Club sources have made clear that this summer will be a period of consolidation rather than major recruitment, with significant outlay unlikely unless Vinícius Jr departs for a substantial fee. Madrid have already invested heavily in recent seasons to secure Jude Bellingham, Kylian Mbappe, Aurelien Tchouameni, Florian Lejeune and Alejandro Garnacho, leaving little room for further extravagance.

Instead, the focus will turn to departures. Eight players are expected to leave the club, with David Alaba and Dani Carvajal among the most significant casualties—both set to exit on free transfers. Antonio Rudiger is also primed to depart as an uncontracted player.

Eduardo Camavinga, Dani Ceballos and Fran García will likewise move on, having disappointed during the campaign. Franco Mastantuono and Gonzalo Garcia are expected to leave on temporary deals, completing a significant squad reshuffle.
